16. Tried anything new with your writing lately? (style, POV, genre, fandom?)

stuffed bird definitely qualified as "new" for me, ESPECIALLY in those first chapters where there was no one else with mumbo. believe it or not, i don't normally write aus as deep as that one! and there was action! that was hard, it was action! so... yeah, i think the thing i was trying new was definitely both "full-scale au" and "actually writing action".

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

this one was harder for me than i thought because my brain became totally and completely empty of all thoughts the moment i'm asked about things i want to talk about. but. okay you know which one i'm going to talk about? so in "a question for the dead", the interviewer never speaks any actual lines of dialogue because who the interviewer is does not matter, and arguably, neither does the questions they are asking. in fact, a strong argument can be made that the interviewer is just meant to be the audience in a lot of ways, as more of a framing device for the characters to talk than anything else. the interviewer is entirely a stand-in, a symbol, a fake thing; i don't think the story would work as well if we heard the questions along with the answers.

it's the middle part of the united states where they put all the HORRIFYINGLY FLAT parts. also yes, where there are lots and lots of corn fields, and fields in general. and it's flat. have i mentioned the terrifying flatness,

one of the ones i'm most likely to write on this list: in which xisuma spends time trying to reconcile what happened in season 8 with his self-image of himself, the idea of him being a good or a bad person, whether he "deserved it", why he still cares about ex, if he could have seen it coming, what happened in the gaps he can't remember, the fact he left everyone behind at the end of the world, the fact that's arguably his fault, the fact he still has to start season 9 because what else are they supposed to do -

i'm just saying that after season 8 xisuma has. shit to work through. and just a slow-paced fic about doing that would be good. it would probably mostly just be... xisuma alone in the nether Dealing With This, but also probably some parts would be set during season 9, or all of it? setting is the part i'm still undecided on.

1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?

HM. open-ended as a question. kinda hard to answer. but... alright. i like apocalypse stories. i'd wanted to do one for hermitcraft for a while. then, a few things happened. first, i was like, "who would be funniest to throw at an apocalypse", and mumbo at the time seemed like a really funny answer. secondly i wanted to do my own take on evil x for a WHILE and that ended up getting absorbed into it. as for the style... that's actually kind of just how i write character pieces. just... EXTREMELY character voice. that was a decision but that's my standing style.

5. What part was hardest to write?

chapter 12. i changed how specifically i wanted it to go several times. the event at the end of chapter 12 is something i always knew needed to be in the fic, but i was... genuinely terrified people would hate me for it actually like i made myself ANXIOUS. that, in turn, made it so i was scared to write it, and kept on changing my mind on how it would work. ultimately, a lot of the melodrama that was in the original version went away in favor of making mumbo more... he's a lot more angry and almost apathetic than he was in the original version because it fits his emotional state and that point of the fic as the emotional low point better. ultimately, people seem to have reacted how i wanted them to the scene, so i think it turned out well! but boy oh boy did i make CIRCLES in my head trying to write that.

already answered this - with the plot! but like, okay, characters drive the plot. i think i should clarify that what i mean is... when i start writing i normally have a "point". sometimes that's not traditionally a plot - it's a theme, or a single idea, or sometimes yeah it's a plot. and then i write around that "point", that central idea of what i'm writing. and so that's a bit more "sketch out the plot first" than "sketch out the characters first", even when sometimes that "point" is a particular character beat! so it's easiest to answer "plot" here.

Z: Major character death–do you ever write/read it? Is there a character whose death you can’t tolerate?

well, obviously i'll write it, given the events of stuffed bird. but will i read it? are there deaths i can't tolerate? so like, here's the thing - major character death falls into a similar category as whump or heavy angst for me in that you've gotta give it a POINT. you've gotta be writing it right. you can kill off my favorite character! i'll be, uh, unhappy, but if that's your goal, sometimes it can work! but god, if you're going to kill off my favorite character, you have to write it well. you have to have a story you're telling with that, a reason you've decided to do it. i can't stand it when characters are killed off for shock value, or for the sole reason that characters dying is something that should be sad. give me SUBSTANCE. with enough substance, i can buy anything.
