Hiroguel: Foster Dad AU Part 2
Credit to @axureerheeid for brilliant ideas. Foster Dad AU Part 1
Temporarily, the orphan lives with Hiro while he searches for a family to become their permanent home. Hiro dubs himself “Uncle Hiro” not only to mimic “Aunt Cass” but also because he’s scared of being a father.
An uncle is an easier concept to digest than a new dad. That, and he can’t afford to get attached.
It’s also easier for the kid to accept. Hiro never intends to replace the kid’s “real dad.” An uncle is a family addition, not an attempt to erase the past.
In the mean time, the child still has to attend school. But, the kid is a genius or smarter than average, meaning they need special classes.
Hiro completes paperwork to become the child’s temporary guardian. The two get along well enough because they’re both smarter than the average person. Hiro files more paperwork and successfully enrolls the kiddo into a home-schooling program with special classes that can properly engage the kiddo.
The teachers are all trained by the program but the parents are allowed to hand pick which teachers are needed or wanted. The kiddo winds up with several specially trained. Mr. Rivera is one of them.
Miguel teaches music, singing, and dancing. He sneaks in positive social skills and stories of tradition and the value of family through specific song choices. Sometimes he even writes original songs tailored around his students own experiences but tweaked with a fantastical flare.
Reviewers say he sprinkles in music history with bright energy and a vibrant curiosity. But, the most prominent praise is that he has a talent for making kids feel right at home. Apparently he has this “family” aura around him. He knows the story of his family up to his grandparents and beyond.
He treats the kids more like family members rather than just students. He connects with them on a personal level and in turn help them connect to their roots. Help them understand where they came from and where they can go with art and love.
Those who Mr. Rivera have taught have healed. Have grown closer together with their parents and the parents in response bond with their child. It’s like magic.
Between the reviews and the teacher’s humorous biography, Hiro sends an email.
“I found your profile on Schools for Special Students. I understand you teach music and singing to middle school students. I have a 12 year old child with higher than average intellect and am in search of an arts teacher. If you are available, I’d appreciate meeting you to discuss further.”
Miguel responds in a timely manner, happy for the interest. He does have the space to tutor another student and is more than willing to meet Hiro and the kiddo.
The three meet in Miguel’s office. The adults do most of the talking since the kid hunches in on themself and sticks close to Hiro’s side. But, once Miguel works his magic with a song or two, the child opens up a bit.
Miguel offers to keep communication open, just in case if Hiro needs more time to think but nope, Hiro saw the magic and yep he would like Miguel to be one of the kiddo’s teachers.
Miguel’s pleasantly surprised but it means they need to talk logistics: time, place, salary. Knowing the kid would be bored outta their mind, he suggests they entertain themselves in the play room next door.
When the kiddo is outta earshot, Hiro says. “A lot of reviewers said you have some sorta magical family healing power? Do you think you could use that on my–” he fumbles to correct himself with a cough. “I mean the kid?”
Miguel chuckles and lightly comments. “I have a feeling it's not only the kid I gotta teach.”
He accepts the job.
Only, it’s not long until everyone realizes…
…they signed up for more than they bargained for.
"Hey, Honda. Can you bear hug me again?"
Honda smiles as he looks down at the small boy. “Sure Hiro. Anything for a friend of a Sumo Wrestler.” He picks up Hiro and gives a bear hug, and made sure it wasn’t so tight.
