Released on " Hirshi vs Keiska - Subtle Suite / Tearjerk "
thefft - start slow (hirshi's undercover remix)
I have no reasonable explanation for not spreading this around earlier, but Archie Pelago's inaugural video mix for Sonic Router is a beast to behold. We've posted of the brilliance of this 3-part monster before, but never has this unit been so on-point and prevalent as they are in this live mix. If you haven't seen these bwoys live, you must be mistaken. Archie Pelago is swiftly growing into a force to be reckoned with, keep your ears peeled for their Mary Anne Hobbs mix later this spring.
Archie Pelago - Frederyck Swerl
Brooklyn trio Archie Pelago posted this winding, rabbit-hole of a jam 'Frederyck Swerl' a month or so ago, and it's past due we post it here. clocking in at just over seven minutes, 'Swerl' unfurls with a meticulous and natural progression unlike most "bedroom" electronica produced by twenty-somethings. impeccably placed percussion billows an array of melodies (and counter melodies) across minutes that could loop for hours and none would be the wiser. forward-thinkers forewarned.

KORTMIX003: Hirshi (Archie Pelago) by www.thekort.com
Hirshi is one-third of the Brooklyn jazz-electronica outfit Archie Pelago. Dude produces, DJs, and plays the trumpet - I can't think of a better trifecta to sum up the New York City music scene than that. Though you won't find any Herbie Hancock in this mix, Hirshi shows off how much farther afield his tastes lie than the Dirty Apple. Funky rhythms shot through an inkjet lens with just the right level of bass to make them heads grin.

Originality and knowledge of a craft are increasingly hard to come by in today's twitterised, tumblified onslaught of new music; the barriers of learning an instrument and writing original compositions (as opposed to covers) used to separate the contenders from the pretenders. With the advent of digital compression and mp3s, however, it is with pride that any 16-year-old can bestow upon the world his marvelously loud, impeccably preset "future" beat.
For better or worse, we are inundated with new music everyday with the majority sounding indistinguishable from the rest. A vast ocean of shit, you see. Luckily, there do exists islands and reefs full of rich, colorful music that deserve to be heard, and some of these revolve around actual musicianship.
Enter an Archie Pelago, a different kind of organism altogether. Blending saxophone, cello, trumpet, and laptop-based performance into a holistic listening experience, the three minds behind Archie seem to understand the value of "live" better than most. In an age of bpm-correcting software and midi brass, it's exceptionally refreshing to hear improvised interplay between traditional, skilled instrumentalists within the homogeneous "bass music" context.

These guys can play ball, and the difference in their sound from similar attempts by solely digital artists is like the divide between athletes on a field and Madden enthusiasts. You can replicate what you see and hear, but can you actually go out and do it.

"Dameo 745" is the opening track on a truly stellar Shrinin EP for Brooklyn-based label End Fence, it's with a strong recommendation that we'll steer you towards that whole release here. For a more relaxed yet grizzled bass vibe, peep the Chocolate Waveplates EP out on Slime Recordings, "Choppin" Fruit" is a particular favorite. A healthy fusion of too many music genres to namecheck, just sit back and listen, we trust you'll enjoy.
