Okay so I've notice there are a bunch of head canons around about Tony's roots Italian or Mexican (my fav) and Steve's own Irish immigrant (Catholic to boot) roots, but do you have any for Bucky? Maybe? Like maybe his parents are immigrants from Romania or elsewhere? Bucky being Jewish? Like I am just curious about your thoughts about his roots?

@dreamcatchersdaughter I’m so sorry for this late response but this is a really good question. 

I’ve never really focused a lot on Bucky’s roots because I always assumed that he was born and bred in New York. But looking into now, it would be really cool if his parents were from Romania. 

They immigrated to America because life in Romania wasn’t the best and they wanted to be able to go somewhere that it would be possible to achieve so much more. Bucky’s mother would probably be pregnant with Bucky by that time but only in the early months so that traveling wouldn’t be so difficult for her. Getting to the States isn’t easy but they manage to land in New York which is where they make a permanent home for themselves. 

The years go by and Bucky grows up learning Romanian as well as English. His father makes sure that he never loses his true roots and his mother tells him that maybe one day, when things are better, they’ll visit Romania and all their family that they hadn’t seen in over ten years. 

Things were hard and some people aren’t so kind to an immigrant family which made some days extremely unbearable but they grow up happy and Bucky grows up becoming a part of New York as well as Romania. 

Then he meets Steve from a young age, their mothers hit it off and they become best friends for life. Steve and Bucky always having each other’s backs no matter what. Bucky would try to show Steve about his culture which Steve is open to as he tries the dishes that Bucky’s mother makes, eating them with a huge grin which makes her ruffle his hair in a soft smile.

Sarah takes the boys out whenever she can to the movies and even to baseball games because that’s what Steve loves. Bucky has never experienced New York like this and begins to love it because this is absolutely amazing. 

So Bucky being fluent in Romanian isn’t something that he learnt while being The Winter Soldier, it was something that is a part of him. And the reason why he flees to Romania is because that is where home is and since he no longer has a home in New York, it made sense for him to go back to where it all began. 

It’s terrible because he can’t contact relatives and meet anyone because he’s on the run and he doesn’t want to put them in trouble. But he feels comfortable, he feels safe even if it’s just for a little while. 

As for being Jewish, I could definitely see that because we could see one of the reason why he wants to fight in the army so much. Around Captain America, it was the Second World War which meant Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Bucky wanting to do everything and anything he can to protect his people and bring Nazi Germany down because he isn’t going to stand for this disgusting and foul treatment towards human beings. 

He wanted to put a stop to this ethnic cleansing and even if he was one man, he was going to try his damn hardest. Steve was definitely by his side immediately and every victory is counted as a step towards freedom. 

I can imagine Bucky being Jewish and Romanian, I think those would be his roots. And I thank you for giving me that idea and helping it evolve because I didn’t expect it to get this much! 

It would be so cool and obviously, this is just one thought out of how many that other people might have for him.
