“Look, I let you into my crew. I didn’t ask for a life story.” In reality, Mal felt she knew too much, any more and she’d probably have trouble sleeping until she figured out a way to get her mom to adopt him... if for no other reason than making sure Carlos never had to see his mother again. And she was trying to keep her evil appearance up, and Carlos made that really hard... which was doubly annoying. Which was why she didn’t want Carlos knowing that she knew about his situation with his mom. Just let him think he impressed her somehow enough to get him on by merit alone. Not saying Carlos was entirely useless or anything, but she generally picked people with a little bit more attitude and a little less... passion for science. “So just... enjoy it, won’t you?”
