Headcanon/Backstory (#thisiswarmarvel)

After being stabbed by Loki during the Helicarrier attack, Phil Coulson was stabilized by the medical team. While reviving, he heard Fury pronouncing him dead to the team. He lost consciousness again, and faced a difficult rehabilitation period that wore on him both mentally and physically even though it was hailed as miraculously short in the grand scheme of things. Although Coulson can understand on an intellectual and tactical level why Fury lied to the team, but the cold calculation and manipulation of emotions sat poorly with the agent.

Currently Coulson struggles with two things; Fury's tactics and a division of loyalty. Up to this point, he has been the unquestioningly loyal superagent, Fury's Good Eye. Now, like so many others, he is finding himself increasingly opposed to the decisions made to eliminate assets based on a single man's word.

Under his still impeccably calm demeanor, Phil Coulson is angry. He's always been capable of great violence, but it has never manifested itself into this level of discontent. Even if it's not apparent yet, Coulson is weighing his options. In large part it is only the continued loyalty of both his partner Maria Hill and Steve Rogers keeping him in Fury's camp. Even if both continue down this path, it's hard to see him staying neutral forever.
