Animals in Fashion Plates:
Fashion plates focus on, well, *fashion*, but sometimes they feature a bit more than just clothes. The artists who create fashion plates... sometimes seem to have drawn the animals from memory, leading to some pretty weird-looking creatures. For this April Fools', I'd like to highlight some of the non-human creatures that I've found in my collection. First up we have the dogs.
Unidentified large, black dog from 1865, unknown artist [1865-08 PET01]
A king charles spaniel from 1870, artist Jules David [1870-11 LJD974B]
Some sort of terrier, I think? Unknown artist, 1871 [1871-06 PET01]
I think this is meant to be some sort of greyhound, whippet or similar? Artist unknown, 1879. The whole plate will be posted later this month, on the 21st. [1879-04 PET01]
Another greyhound-like creature, this time from 1885, artist probably De Casimacker (signature in reverse on the plate) [1885-00 JDD4541]
The singular cat that I've been able to find is this one from 1893, artist Esnault [1893-03 JDD4927]
How do you depict the back of a riding habit? Draw a man on the back of a horse. From 1830, artist unknown. [1830-02 PCD704]
A pair of carriage horses in the background of an 1879 plate, artist unknown [1879-03 PET01]
Another pair of carriage horses, by De Casimacker [1885-00 JDD4541]
Birds - living only, I'm not counting birds-on-hats for this.
A pair of small parrots/budgies (or at least that's what I'd call them) in a cage from 1870. [1870-02 PET01]
Some sparrows, or sparrow-like birds from 1885, artist Lacourier. [1885-00 JDD4542]
I don't know what this bird is. Artist Esnault, 1895. [1895-06 JDD504x]
