Nepeta hadn’t really asked to work with the theater kids on their production. She wasn’t all that into theater. There were all these rules about props and what to do and not to do and things to touch and not to touch and where to go when and so on and so forth. Nepeta was not a rules type of person. She was more of a free spirit. She was an artist. There were no rules in art. So how did she end up working with the theater kids?
It had started with this unofficial contest some kids were having in her art class. Some kids had started it awhile ago and Nepeta loved a challenge. Everyone brought a dollar to class put it in a hat. Then someone would decide something to draw and everyone would draw it and then they would all vote on who’s was the best. Whoever won got the cash. Nepeta almost always won.
Anyway it was during one of these contests that Nep got into trouble. That weeks drawing theme was fashion show. Nep was on the road once again to victory when the teacher caught them. Of course she couldn’t say they were betting on art. That kind of stuff wasn’t allowed. So Nepeta had just said they were designing Fashion for no reason. She studied Nepeta’s work and asked if she wanted to do an extra credit assignment. Nepeta had instantly agreed. Anything to change the subject.
And that’s how she ended up designing the costumes for the theater kid’s play. Or not designing. Just drawing. Some other kid would be telling her what to draw from what she understood. She didn’t know. All she knew was that she didn’t like this idea but whether she liked it or not Nepeta still honored her commitment and showed up at the auditorium that first day.
When she first stepped into the auditorium she was immediately surprised by the hustle and bustle going on around her. She hadn’t expected so much going on. She stepped out of the way of a few kids moving a set piece and was immediately bumped into by a few more kids holding clipboards and checking mics. She tried to find somewhere to be out of the way but couldn’t.
Nepeta puffed out her cheeks. Some welcome. Nepeta was dandy with hustle and bustle but this was a little much. She had never been to a play before let alone helped out with one so she didn’t know what all was needed to prepare for one. Was this usual? she felt a little out of place. She brushed a stray black curl from face as she sidestepped two kids talking about lighting and tripped over her own shoes and fell into someone and they both went tumbling to the ground. She looked up at the boy she’d knocked over. She was a little surprised to see the kid had violet hair.
“Oh gosh,” She blushed, sitting up and collecting her sketchbooks and pencils which had scattered about, “I’m sorry! I’m so sorry. I’m not usually like this, I mean I’m not usually here, I mean I’m supposed to be here I just don’t normally come here. I mean I’m supposed to be meeting this kid here, Um I think his name was Eridan, Eridan Ampora??”
