Rising alternative pop singer-songwriter ellakate is set to captivate audiences once again with her latest single, ‘Crime’. With a signature blend of sultry vocals, sharp lyricism, and hypnotic production, ‘Crime’ solidifies ellakate as an artist to watch in the modern alt-pop scene.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, ellakate has been crafting music since childhood, inspired by the storytelling magic of songs like ‘Brandy’ by Looking Glass. Her sound—often compared to a young Sara Bareilles—seamlessly merges the haunting and bold essence of artists like Billie Eilish, BANKS, Marina and the Diamonds, Royal & the Serpent, and UPSAHL.
“‘Crime’ is a song I started writing years ago and forgot about,” ellakate shares. “This past summer, it randomly got stuck in my head. I was heading to Nashville to record new music and hadn’t decided which songs to work on. Since ‘Crime’ refused to leave my mind, I figured it was worth finishing.” After receiving glowing feedback from her vocal coach, she wrapped up the song’s production in just a week, incorporating mostly electronic instrumentation, a few unconventional sounds—including a heavily affected screech from a friend—and a driving guitar line.
At its core, ‘Crime’ is an exaggerated, cheeky take on the feeling of unexpectedly falling for someone. “I was never super into dating growing up, so when I started crushing on someone, I was caught off guard. It was almost frustrating because suddenly, he was taking up all this space in my head, and I was like, ‘Bro, I have things to do—I don’t have time for this,’” ellakate explains. “Everything dramatic is more fun, so I leaned into that energy for the song.”
With ‘Crime’, ellakate delivers an irresistibly cool, sassy pop anthem that’s sure to resonate with fans of sharp-witted, sonically adventurous storytelling.
