the hive is a joining & an erasure at once of course but the ways in which CAROL contextualizes it. again it's like "you stole it out of [the chef's] brain" & "you're not going to turn me into one of your worker bees, are you" is undeniably arising from the horror of sameness associated w socialism that's what i've been trying to figure out & it just hit i don't think it's the narrative lynchpin in the sense that well the hive may be doing something different but carol's approach is very much informed by her usamerican capitalist bootstraps blindness. does that make sense

i can't believe we get carol pushing zosia around a little and fucking with her and drawing upon her inability to disagree with anything carol asks to get her to act against the best interests of the hive ie to get her to hurt herself by her own hand while carol watches . AND we get zosia insulting her w the devastating uncanny and hilarious accuracy of every person thats ever known her especially helen in the way that turns carol on and gets her fired up & ready to move . in yuriworld

the partial assimilation the hive brings about is so interesting like it isn't that culture is abandoned but only the parts of it useful to the hive's most urgent goals are considered & used. they sing in ep9 bc kusimayu is still unaffected by the Spread clearly nervous & and bringing her into the fold still requires these familiar touchstones. and language isn't neutralized exactly but it is frozen like every language is rendered equally valuable at a time when theres an obvious inequality in the visibility or usage or significance of such languages & the same applies to ways of living--downsizing & giving up luxuries looks very different in different places w different relationships to the imperial core & the global supply chain. i have no definitive statement to make here i just think unless specific active measures are taken to reinforce and revive marginalized & vulnerable cultures well for the hive's own efficiency what's popular ie what was enforced thru a specific hegemon will continue to use that channel of past violence. the way zosia was sent to carol to seduce her into joining
