this definitely started out as a lie and then words got ahead of him and suddenly there was something very earnest in what he was saying

I like to imagine this just means that he's going to credit her in the acknowledgements section of the paper he will eventually publish in the peer-reviewed academic sith alchemical science journal which definitely exists.

but probably only as a "thank you to the many acolytes who assisted with the collection of tuk'ata specimens", in much the way i've once been credited in a paper as one of "many undergraduate students"
