Lif's whole situation is so weird bc like.

ok they are at least PART moth. just a regular moth that didn't hatch for fuckign. decades. this is as normal as we are ever going to get.

the REASON they couldn't hatch is the complicated part.

i think that "Lif" (not necessarily Lif but whatever they were before being a bug - they probably had a different name) is a higher being, specifically related to dreams. not necessarily the Radiance? Lif would've definitely been lower than beings like Wyrms / Nightmare King Gr.imm / or even the White Lady, so the Radiance wouldn't have viewed them as "competition" - She probably didn't view them at all, since they weren't a particularly higher being, nor able to follow Her.

I think higher-being Lif possibly wouldn't be as awake & aware as the other ones. u know how it feels to be in a dream vs irl? that would be their existence. they're listed in Godhome with Grimm as "duo gods of dream and nightmares" - not "dreams" but "dream". Higher being Lif is attuned to dreams in general, but is more closely associated with one's personal dream, with that "dream-like feeling," and on a slightly less prominent level, happiness in general.

the reason it specifically takes the (pre-player) summoning of the Grimm Troupe in order for higher being Lif to die their first death (and subsequently enter Hallownest) is pretty simple - the disruption of a dream entity jarred them out of their natural state. they didn't know how to deal with Nightmare King just dipping into reality so they did not, in fact, deal with it.

TL;DR: Lif was a lower dream entity who got startled so badly they entered reality inside a formerly-empty egg

Additional timeline info:

The Troupe Master Grimm at the time of Lif's hatching isn't the Troupe Master she and the player meet - the Grimmchild at the time is. this is hard to explain because every Grimm is the same Nightmare King but not vice versa im so sorry.
