Stand Together

Assemblies restarted this week following the mock exams and on Monday we reflected on Holocaust Memorial Day, which marked the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. It has been a great honour to take older pupils to see the remains of the camp and to reflect on what happened; experiences that will live with us for the rest of our lives. Our ability for evil is shocking but it only happened because others let it. In the years leading up to the Holocaust, Nazi policies and propaganda deliberately encouraged divisions within German society – urging ‘true’ Germans to keep themselves separate from their Jewish neighbours. The Holocaust, Nazi Persecution of other groups and each subsequent genocide, was enabled by ordinary citizens not standing with their targeted neighbours. As part of the events to mark the occasion a video was shown at all FA Cup football games last weekend. Reminding us to stand together and not to stand by – it is well worth watching.
