Ma van a roma ellenállás napja.
1944. május 16-án Auschwitz-Birkenauban mintegy 6500 roma embert akartak elgázosítani, ők azonban hősiesen ellenálltak.
Síri csöndben, bilincsekkel, deszkákkal, kövekkel néztek szembe a fegyveres SS - őrökkel.
Ehhez hasonló tömeges ellenállásra sem előtte, sem utána nem volt példa Auschwitzban.
A lázadás követően a rabok felét ( főleg férfiakat) más koncentrációs táborokba szállították. Az ott maradt több mint 3000 embert, gyerekeket, anyákat, időseket 1944. augusztus 2-án éjjel gyilkolták meg.
A kevés túlélő, aki tanúja volt a cigánytábor heroikus küzdelmének, mind arról számolt be, hogy a romák az utolsó percig harcoltak az életükért.
A romák ellenállása azt üzeni a világnak, hogy minden elnyomással, gyűlölettel szemben, még a legkilátástalanabb, legembertelenebb helyzetben is szembe lehet szállni.
A roma ellenállás hőseinek nevét nem jegyzi a történelem. Emberek voltak. Bátor emberek.
