IX: character A plays a joke on B

By Martin's third April with MJN, he'd long since realised he was never going to out-practical joke Douglas Richardson. And this year, he decided to put his acceptance of the fact to good use.

He practiced, in the mirror, exactly the kind of smug, anticipatory smirk Douglas pulled frequently. He learnt to stifle a laugh audibly, worked on sideways glances, darting his eyes quickly away from random objects, arousing suspicion while seeming to be trying not to.

There might be no practical element to his joke whatsoever, but Martin was pleased to see his co-pilot looking distinctly wary of him.
