Hmong International New Year in China
Many Hmong New Year celebrations in China, from Guizhou to Yunnan begin around the beginning of February and lasts between 5-14 days. The video is in the Hmong language only, but here is a synopsis: This video from Hmong World channel shows the Hmong New year from the Honghe province from a few years ago. Hmong people from around the world, from the States, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and so on all come to southern China to celebrate the many Hmong New Year events. There is a beautiful variety of Hmong fashion, many of the Hmong girls design and sew their own outfits, making it very unique and extravagant! In the interviews you can hear dialect differences and with some of the girls, just like in America with the younger generations, their Hmong language skills are not up to par either. They tend to speak Hmong at home, but Mandarin outside of the home, similar to Hmong Americans. There is a guest interview appearance by our international Hmong Qeej superstar Yang Geli at around the 14 minute mark. Warning, the video has some annoying things like the loudspeakers drowning out the actual interview, but it’s still interesting to view. There are tons of Hmong World videos to watch. Though not the slickest production quality nor very deep storytelling, the videos gives us some insight into Hmong lives on the other side of the world. We would love to visit China someday for the Hmong New Year, what about you?

My lovely Mom, my dear Angel. Hmong new year is approaching soon and I’m in pain just thinking about how you would prepare a new Hmong outfit for me each year. You’d spend countless hours and days just hand-sewing and crafting me a set to wear and I’d be so excited to show off your hard work. You and your beautiful creations, your beautiful mind, your beautiful soul .. I will never find elsewhere. New Years will never be the same no more from here on out .. I need you Mom.
