Sony HMZ-T3 PS4
So I just want to say, I see the HMZ-T3 getting a bunch of press at the moment as one of Sony's stabs at competing with the Rift. But it's not a gaming solution, they claim... "[it] is not a dedicated gaming VR headset like the Oculus Rift"... I think they are going to release another cheaper model later, probably with a higher resolution, to compete with the Rift specifically. (see http://www.geek.com/games/sony-reportedly-working-on-3d-virtual-reality-headset-for-the-ps4-1569446/). But as for the T3, I just wanted to write down the specs and comparisons and say that, as a gaming device, I am really not impressed with this device quite yet.
Random FOV ramble:
The rhetoric, "the HMZ-T3W features two 1280 x 720 resolution OLED panels reported to offer a viewing experience equivalent to watching a 19 m (62.5 ft) screen from 20 m (66 ft) away" ... imo is the most idiotic way to describe your device...it's a completely unintuitive way to think about screens. Let's do math... let's assume the screen is ~16.5 m x 9.3 m (pixels are square)...so fields of view are 2*atan(16.5/20) and 2*atan(9.3/20) = 79 degrees horiz and 50 degrees vertical. Not /too/ bad for their resolution. For comparison the Oculus Rift dev kit FOV = 90 degrees horiz per eye by 110 degrees vertical.
So here are the specs, all in a nice straight list...because honestly Sony seems to be trying to hide some of these numbers with flowery rhetoric and it's just nice to see them all (and compared to the rift).
Price: $2000 (ORdk: $300)
FOV: 80 degrees horiz * 50 degrees vertical. (ORdk: 90 x 110)
Latency: No idea. (ORdk: <=30ms)
Screen switching time:
Resolution: 1280x720 per eye (ORdk: 640 x 480 per eye)
Pixels per Degree: 16 horiz x 9 horizontal (ORdk: ~5 ppd).
Developers: Unknown atm (Ps4 and PC) (ORdk: Unity, Source, Unreal, Cryengine (kind of), open source C++ library)
Weight: 320g (ORdk: 379g)
Overall the T3 looks like a decent product, although definitely not for gaming. It looks to be focused as a mobile TV / monitor platform for casual viewing of 2d and 3d content on the go. But I think it will flop, just like the 2d TV...HMDs as a mobile viewing platform never seemed like a wonderful idea, esp as they are forced to be a single-user device. But we'll see. Anyway, ramble over.
