The Hoary Marmot (Marmota caligata) lives above the tree line in the Rocky Mountains. As far as I’m aware it does not possess the prognosticative powers of its cousin, the groundhog. Marmot peaking out at me from the rocks. . I only saw the one for a couple seconds. Usually if I see one, I see lots. . It could be a hoary marmot or yellow bellied marmot. Both are in the region. To my eyes, it seemed more grey and black, but then the color came out when I edited the photos. I didn't get a very good look and the colors in the photo are not much of an indication since I sort of stylized them. . Anyway, marmots are definitely one of my favorite animals. Just don't feed them! Of all animals, marmots seem the most prone to habituation. In some places they are so used to people and getting food from them that they'll come right up to you and try to get into your backpack if you don't feed them. It may seem cute, but it gets them killed when they start to be a nuisance on land where they're not protected. Additionally, as everyone probably knows, our food isn't typically healthy for them, they get overweight, and start to depend on humans for food, etc. I'm sure anyone interested enough to read a caption about marmots already knows not to feed wildlife. . There are also exceptions, but it's probably best left to biologists to decide when to supplement nature's offerings. . . . #marmot #marmots #yellowbelliedmarmot #hoarymarmot #nature #wildlife #washingtonwildlife #wenatchee #wenatcheewild #madriver #lowermadriver #pineflats #centralcascades #entiat #okanoganwenatcheenationalforest #washingtonstate (at Mad River (Washington)) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPV4xZugROS/?utm_medium=tumblr
