The Campus Hobos Review Famous Peppers Gourmet Pizzas

In what turned out to be one of the best partnerships in investigative journalism/pizza reviewing in Cadre history, Famous Peppers came to the Campus Hobos' rescue on Thursday with some complimentary pizzas. The Hobos, hungry and sleepy after a week on campus, are forever grateful. Famous Peppers has been the King of gourmet pizza in Charlottetown since they moved into Kent St. roughly a year ago. Peppers offers around 15 signature pizzas on their menu, and also come up with ridiculous(ly delicious) "Pizza of the Moment" creations.  Their creativity, combined with the use of local ingredients and a high standard of quality has rocketed them to the top of Charlottetown's diverse pizza scene. Last night, Peppers sent the Campus Hobos six half-pizzas, as seen in the pictures, and we reviewed the shit out of them.  Enjoy, we did. 

The Cardigan (left-hand side of image)

This pizza is the standard bearer of Famous Peppers' pizzas.  It is essentially a deluxe deluxe pizza.  It has more veggies and meats than your standard pizza of this variety, but it won't get old fast. Hobo Bob says he would "be able to eat [The Cardigan] for a month without getting sick of it". 

Hobo Rating: 8 Tires Fires out of 10.   

The Doctor (right-hand side of image)

Similar to the Cardigan, The Doctor is a deluxe veggie pizza.  It's colourful as all hell, has gratuitous cheeses (feta, mozzarella, parmesan sprinkles) and fresh veggies (tomatos, olives, onions, peppers, mushrooms), and gives the illusion of being healthy.  Hobo josh, who had this as his sixth slice, claimed it "breathed life back into him".  

Hobo Rating: 8 Roasted Pigeon Wings out of 10.   

The Pathfinder (bottom half of image)

The pathfinder is kind of a spicy variant of a standard meat pizza.  It has sausage, pepperoni, green peppers, and most importantly a bunch of feta cheese.  The feta often finds itself marinating within the fine contours of the curled up pepperoni slices.  This leaves a curious effect; each feta chunk becomes dyed orange by the succulent orange grease that we've all come to know and love when it comes to pepperoni pizza.  

Hobo Rating: 8.5 Bindle Sticks out of 10.  

The Hero (right-hand side of image)

The Hero is arguably the most unique pizza currently sold in PEI. It has ham, a spicy mustard sauce, onions, and big long chunks of dill pickle. Most of the hobos related it to home-cooked ham and mustard pickles dinners, but with a tangy twist. The Hobos were amenable to consuming this Easter dinnerish pizza; however, those who aren't fans of pickles won't be able to fully enjoy the distinct flavours of the pizza. It might not find its place as a pizza staple, but if you're feeling adventurous it is absolutely worth of your time. 

Hobo Rating: 9.5 Boxcars out of 10 on the first try (though that score declines slightly with every additional slice) . 

The Maple Chicken (bottom right side of image)

Another unique pizza, this one had a delicious maple cream base and was garnished with spinach, red onion, grilled chicken, and bacon. The spinach was a nice touch, adding the appearance and texture of the pizza. The chicken was cooked to perfection, but the big story is the sauce. Rather than a tomato-based sauce, this pizza was made with creamy maple base, giving the whole thing a predominantly sweet taste.  Like the hero, it's very different and refreshing, but some hobos found the sauce somewhat overpowering. 

Hobo Rating: 8.75 Fingerless Gloves out of 10.   

The Spud Islander (right-hand side of image)

Also one of Famous Peppers' signature pizzas, the Spud Islander is a sweet/savoury pizza with sliced potatoes, crispy onion ringlets and a sprinkling of crispy bacon. This is the unique pizza that could be eaten week after week. It's just so damn good. The onions add flavour and the potatoes' texture is perfect. This one takes the hobo cake. 

Hobo Rating: 9.5 Sharp-Ass Hobo Knives out of 10. 

Famous Peppers is in the running for the Pizza Hall of Fame "Best Private Pizzaria" award.  They get $10,000 worth of chesse if they win. You can vote for them online at pizzahalloffame.ca. If they win they will give three of the people who voted free pizza for a year! Voting opens October 22nd.

Hobo Recap: Monday

The campus hobos made it through Monday to tell their tale.  Here it is. Josh

Arrived on campus for a 10:30am class. After class I dug out some Mac n’ Cheese from the Cadre office fridge that I had frozen during education week. It was a big ugly brain-type blob, which I had to break in half before defrosting/microwaving. Found a stick of butter and tossed a big chunk of it in, which made it delicious. Around supper time, I move the SU microwave into the Cadre office and heated up a leftover enchilada that I brought from home. Drank some coffee that was leftover from Mickey’s Place earlier in the day. During my night class mid-class break I went over to the Deans’ Honours Awards to scope out free food, but the timing was off and I didn’t get any. Met up with the other hobos after class and went to Dalton Hall, where Travis and I slept in the abandoned FNS lounge.  Bob

Today was not difficult, thankfully. It was a good transition. I came to UPEI around 9:00am this morning to do some experiments and perform some data analysis. Lunch consisted of a delicious slow cooker meal prepared by an office mate (chicken + green beans + potatoes). Dessert consisted of cupcakes and cinnamon rolls. My office mates also took pity on me and gave me some free food (multivitamins and crispers). The one thing I was worried about this week was a lack of coffee. However, the department that I work in has free coffee on all of the time, which I am now taking full advantage of. First day accommodations were kindly provided by the GSA. I survived the first day. Let’s see what tomorrow brings. Travis

I arrived early on campus this morning: a brisk 6:15am. I started my day by working at the Sports Centre from 6:30–11:30 AM. Following that I headed to my French class, and ducked out a bit early to attend the candidates’ meeting for the SU elections.  After that I hung out in the Cadre office, half working on an economics assignment and half shooting the shit with our volunteers and staff. Dinner hour came and went. The solution? Beans. So good. I had a night class, but managed to get out at 9:30pm to hit up Deans’ Honours and Awards Night, where I scooped up some grapes. They’re reserved for Tuesday’s hobo breakfast. One night down; three to go.
