Possible questions and issues that might arise: Tracking system to facilitate borrowing tablets Are the tablets charged ready to use? Is the wifi connectivity solid enough? Staff resistance – demonstrate that we are all adding to our skillsets Include a range of different devices Class sets 1-to1 deployment vs BYOD, or a hybrid model?
Implementation Issues to Consider 1. Technical stuff Robust wifi IT support Hardware Software / apps - buying and syncing 2. Classroom stuff Distraction – but this will happen anyway Address distraction issues with simple classroom management techniques
Set time limits for tasks Ask learners to turn devices face down at certain points Encourage movement by using QR codes around the class / school Develop an Acceptable Use Policy for under 18s Are students allowed to film the teacher without permission and upload photos? Set rules in advance and detail the consequences of what happens if rules are broken Get parents on board Students sign to allow the school to use photos on website Teachers accept that we don't know everything Tech can empower students – it’s a good thing for teachers to let go 3. Logistical stuff BYOD and a range of devices Charged up Storage Buying apps Volume purchase programme Breakage, loss and theft Insurance 4. Pedagogical stuff Effective use to enhance the activity Teacher training to gain confidence and design meaningful tasks Use devices for production Learner training - some students can be resistant to focus on production Integrate digital products students create into assessment Develop criteria that takes on digital literacies Need to consider appropriate use of digital content, sourced Creative Commons Train teachers how to troubleshoot in class Get tablets into the hands of teachers early on Class sets

Focus on production not just reproduction MacFridays with devices in the hands of teachers Different levels of proficiency Post work on a wiki Champions needs to be the best teachers Implementation Plan. Identify your reasons for going mobile Assess your context Involve all the stakeholders Present your case for going mobile Create learning plans - how will teachers start integrating activities into classes alongside course books? Assign teacher champions Run a pilot phase Evaluate your pilot phase Extend your implementation plan Provide ongoing teacher development Case Study 3 British Council, Hong Kong SIG for teachers Tasks and apps shared in edmodo Getting content off the iPads when move to another class was an issue Need to give iPads to teachers in advance to explore new apps and become comfortable Digital CPD - In-service training is voluntary Cyclical training model to incorporate new teachers whenever they join Not a syllabus but a working group Includes late-comers
