The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a fail-safe seed storage facility, built to stand the test of time — and the challenge of natural or man-made disasters.
The Svalbard seed vault. One of the early inspirations for Hodmim’s Hold.
Our Frozen Zoo® is the largest and most diverse collection of its kind in the world. It contains over 10,000 living cell cultures, oocytes, sperm, and embryos representing nearly 1,000 taxa, including one extinct species, the po’ouli. Located at the Beckman Center for Conservation Research, the collection is also duplicated for safekeeping at a second site.
This idea of a frozen zoo (for animals) or a seed vault (for plants) was one of the early inspirations for Hodmim’s Hold.
One of the things that I like to explore in Hodmim’s Hold is this idea of Post-Humans. What does the world look like when humanity has evolved past what we are now, including the integration of technology, genetic engineering, and the effect of other events.
The 6th Great Extinction event. Otherwise known as the Anthropocene Extinction - animal extinctions caused by humans. Hodmim’s Hold occurs in a futuristic world where humans have also become extinct, to be replaced by post-humans.

Part One: The Slaver's Attack
The village of Ghimell has always seemed like an idyllic refuge in the mountains with rustic charm but it hides a deeper secret. Slavers from the south invade destroying the village and taking many prisoners. Luckily, the village was warned, and the Elders had time to lead the youth into a secret fortress in the mountains called 'Hodmim's Hold'. There, a level of technology never encountered before by the villagers indicates there is more going on with the village than the youth have been told. Past inequalities and injustices come to the fore to reveal the village's darker past. The lovers Nedrun and Epona find a clue, but will they have time to solve it? And will their relationship survive the answers they seek? Yorm, Yiwa and Jeran try to rebuild the village, but the Elders are keeping something from them, and politics seems to be in play when everyone should be focusing on survival. Will corruption destroy the village before the slavers are even finished?
