Look who came home from his tour with the Hoffman Challenge! The one on the left is modeled from Thumper, and was made for the 2016 Hoffman Challenge; the right one is Bobbin, made a few months later for the QuiltFest Challenge. This is the first time both my finished Picatsos have been side by side (though they did both wind up at the same show in February). Of course, seeing them like this makes me want to make a few changes to the first one so it's little brother doesn't outshine it.

One of the many exhibits at World Quilt Show Florida was the Hoffman Challenge. The traveling exhibit is separated into 8 or 9 trunks and then sent to different shows for the year. Danise Kemp (Miss D) owns one of my favorite local shops, and a few years ago she started her own annual quilt show. An ambitious undertaking, to say the least, and it has continued to grow each year.
This quilt was originally made for the Hoffman Challenge in 2016 (the first time Hoffman used a digitally printed fabric for the contest), and is a fun tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright. It won Second Place for Other Techniques at this year’s show.

There was a time (not long ago, in fact) that I gave very little thought to the quilting process. It was all about the appliqué work for me. How times have changed. When I first drew out "Picatso" I already had a good idea how I was going to quilt it, and I even incorporated it into my original sketch. I floated diamonds and triangles (cut from tissue paper) over the original shapes I painted on the background to mark where I will quilt triangle borders. The borders will be left empty for texture, and I'll play with different fillers to finish it. I was lucky to just get my tissue markers pinned down before Bobbin pitched in to help. I guess that's it for today.
