Attention to Detail: Meet Desi Wood

Every morning, she puts on her hard hat and vest and joins the team, most of them men, from Hoffman Construction and its contractors to stand alongside Portland Japanese Garden Curator Sadafumi (“Sada”) Uchiyama.

Desirae Wood, or “Desi” as she’s affectionately called by her friends and co-workers, moved to Portland nine years ago from Colorado.

After receiving her Landscape Architecture degree from Colorado State University, she went through the Master Gardener, Organic Gardening programs at Oregon State University. Around that same time, Wood started volunteering at the Garden. She quickly became Sada’s part time consultant. Read more here

All the Right Steps

Hoffman Construction crews have now put in the steps to what will soon be the Living Room space inside the Japanese Arts Learning Center building. Read more on the project really starting to take shape, here.

Big Crane Boulder Placement

Its been a busy week for Portland Japanese Garden team members and construction crews.

They’ve spent the past few days placing boulders near the soon-to-be Chabana (茶花) “tea flower” Garden.

The flowers will be grown and put together for display at our tea ceremonies.

As you can see from this picture, Garden Curator Sadafumi Uchiyama is working “in the trenches” alongside Hoffman Construction crews to place the massive boulders.

A crane lowers the rocks down and crews strategically place each and every one – until they’re set just right.
