The Hakawai is a legendary bird from Māori mythology. It is one of the eleven sacred birds of Raka-maomao, the god of wind. Though it is more often heard than seen, the Hakawai is described as the size of a moa, with black feathers and a red tuft on its head.
Encounters with the Hakawai have mostly been reported from the Muttonbird Islands of southern New Zealand. Ornithologist Colin Miskelly has posited that the cries of the Hakawai may have actually belonged to the South Island snipe, which went extinct in the 1960s.
