On Jadavpur University ex-VC's statements upon resignation

Jadavpur University's outgoing Vice-Chancellor, who resigned a couple of days ago, had much to say. Here are some snippets.

"I am not resigning under any compulsion. I am not succumbing under pressure of the undemocratic student agitation. I chose to step down because I have failed to instill discipline in Jadavpur University, a premier educational institution of the country.

If he's agreed to resign on his own, and not due to political pressure, great! At least he's realizing that he's been a failure, although the nature of the failure is probably still beyond him (or at least, beyond public statements).

He registered his protest against the "anarchism perpetrated by the agitating students and unfortunately by the teachers who are members of JUTA". In saying so, he blamed a section of Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA) for "misguiding" students. "Students are at the formative stage and they need guidance. They need to realize that the university campus is not meant for indulgence in addictions and substance abuse, including alcohol and cannabis. I feel it every teacher's duty to guide students, not to misguide them." In his parting shot, the VC hoped that students will realize his "good intentions" when they become fathers.

So the students were wrong, and their teachers were wrong. Does that mean that the only person with any sense at JU would be Chakrabarti himself? That is some amazing delusion right there. And what's this about realizing good intentions when they become parents (fathers and mothers; perhaps Chakrabarti has forgotten about the female students at JU)? The teachers at JU certainly include many who are parents, and they are in full support of the students!

Such nonsense, as well, about alcohol and drugs. I've heard this trope before during this saga, and really have no patience for it. This is a stupid enough comment that it doesn't need refuting. Perhaps Chakrabarti does not realize that the campus that he's accusing of being drunk and high has just been re-selected as a "University with Potential for Excellence" by the University Grants Commission.

And finally:

The midnight police crackdown on students on September 17, however, didn't find mention in the VC's written statement.

His thoughts on what started it all had to be prompted by reporters. Everyone else's thought on that fateful night is perhaps best portrayed by this cartoon by my JU ex-batchmate Sambuddha Bishee:

With the denouement of #hokkolorob, finally, I'll just say that Abhijit Chakrabarti never should have been Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University. He never understood his students, and never attempted to. He didn't have their well-being first on his mind, whatever else he might have had. There's a reason all of Kolkata, all JU's alumni across the globe and even JU teachers, rose in anger and support of student demonstrations. There's a reason this became so much more than a student protest. They are not the ones wrong, "misguided", out of their minds, Abhijit Chakrabarti. You are.
