The Eagles - Please Come Home For Christmas

Although it's more of a heartbreak song than a song for the season, because it mentions the holiday, Please Come Home For Christmas has come to be closely associated with Christmas. It was originally recorded in 1961 by Blues singer and pianist Charles Brown. It has been recorded dozens upon dozens of times over the years by other artists, but perhaps the most popular version is the one released by Southern California Country Rock band, The Eagles.

TLC - Sleigh Ride

First composed in 1946 as an instrumental by Leroy Anderson, lyrics were written and added in 1950 and over the years, Sleigh Ride has been covered by dozens of artists. In 1993, TLC put their own funky spin on the holiday staple for the soundtrack to the Home Alone sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York. For those who like to jam (which includes me on a not-so-rare occasion), it's great fun to listen to!

Holiday Favorite Flashback

Every week from now until Christmas, we'll revisit one of the many great songs released during the season. The inaugural entry doesn't take us very far into the past...just last year. But it's such a great song, I had to feature it.

The Philly Specials - All I Want For Christmas Is You

We all know the song (and if we all don't, I have to ask what rock we've been living under) originally recorded by Mariah Carey and covered by tons of artists over the years including the likes of Justin Bieber and Michael Bublé just to name a few. Last year, Jordan Mailata, Jason Kelce, and Lane Johnson - three Offensive Linemen on the Philadelphia Eagles, recorded a version of it along with a handful of other holiday classics for an album entitled A Philly Special Christmas. Surprisingly (or maybe NOT surprisingly considering Mailata is a classically trained vocalist), it's a really good cover. It's fitting that a city that birthed a whole R&B/Soul movement in the 1970s (McFadden & Whitehead, The O'Jays, The Spinners, The Stylistics, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, and more) as well as more recent acts like Boyz II Men, Jill Scott, Pink, Musiq Soulchild, and The Roots would give us such a soulful take on an already great song.
