@actualtrashreblogs​ hi! i saw you reblogged my post re: tucker’s eye color, and i wanted to let you know that no, no one was calling you an idiot. your intelligence was not being called into question at all. i brought up genetics because i am not in anyone else’s head; i cannot know if people just aren’t aware of how the genes for eyes are passed down.

as i said here, i’m not trying to tell anybody that their headcanons aren’t allowed. all i am asking is for people to examine them. they don’t exist in vacuums. 

i had a talk with @mdecarabas​ yesterday, and she reminded me that poc drawn with lighter eyes happens in tons of fandoms, even where alien magic as a headcanon isn’t available. that’s just how people imagine them off the bat. there’s a reason for that. 

people draw kimball with blue eyes and say it’s to match her armor color, but like—why aren’t donut’s eyes lightish red pink.

why aren’t wash’s eyes yellow, or sarge’s eyes red as hell.

if you give me pieces where everybody’s eyes match, i got no problems with that. it’s seeing poc again and again given traditionally white traits—like straight hair vs. curly—that catches my attention.

in one of the posts i was responding to, it was said that questioning tucker being given blue eyes goes directly against “don’t assume a character is white because we’re told they have blue eyes”.

we aren’t told tucker has blue eyes. we’re told he’s black. so why is it that what popped into people’s heads was that he’s blue eyed, when chances are, the majority of black people they’ve come into contact with are brown-eyed? there’s a reason for that. 

western society holds white features above everything else. this is something none of us can escape from, so of course it’s going to leak into things like fiction. 

as i have said, and will keep saying, it’s something to think about. no one can know your conclusions but you. 

and i’m not just speaking to you, but everybody who this doesn’t sit right with. having internalized racism in your adolescence doesn’t make you a bad person. it makes you a human. but you get to decide whether you’re going to actually engage with these concepts in your adulthood and think about the way you think, or just insist the people who are starting these conversations need to shut up. 

i was a little black girl who thought looking like cameron diaz, my dad’s favorite white actress at the time, was the Pinnacle of Attractiveness. it took me years to find men of color to be attractive. i had to be called out on the fact that my favorite actors and characters were always white a lot as a kid. 

in a lot of families, this doesn’t happen. at all. ever.

and you know what, at first it sucked! it made me really uncomfortable to have something that i thought i ~couldn’t control questioned. but my family was doing me a valuable favor by saying we see you instead of turning a blind eye. and eventually i got older, educated myself, and realized i had a lot of work to do.

and instead of getting pissed off, i did it.

it took a while. i’m still working at it. but i am a hell of a lot better at it than i used to be. so when i say there’s stuff that needs to be examined and pitched overboard, i’m not making it up—i’m saying it because i myself have done it.

I didn't eat any ice cream or candy at work today. 😹 the only topping I ate was peanut butter. I'm proud of myself. Also! I picked up another shift tomorrow and I've already gotten 40 hours this week so I get time and a half for all my hours tomorrow. Yay for huge paychecks.
