“His color is bright chestnut - like a tongue of fire against black field furrows, against green corn blades, against yellow wheat, against blue horizons. Never is he any other color” - Marguerite Henry
Careful breeding programmes seek to nurture and bloom the stock of this precious and beloved 1500s breed of fine English heavy horse, now listed as critically endangered. The narrow band of colouration of the beautiful Suffolk Punch offers owners a choice of chestnut or chestnut; these remarkably powerful and vigorous creatures often sport flowing, sparkling blonde manes.
The breed, named Punch for its energy, strength and enthusiasm, has long been used as a work horse, ploughing & pulling carts and later vans, as well as heavy artillery in the war. Its speed adapts well to riding, and its beauty equips it perfectly as a show horse. This Suffolk icon can lay claim to what is perhaps the longest pedigree of any recorded livestock breed.
