On April 9, 2016, I ran the 5th anniversary Hollywood Half Marathon "Run With The Stars" in Las Angeles. The race organizers did a brilliant job of creating a 5-inch medal for all the finishers. I thought a creative medal deserves a creative frame and after some trial and errors, I created a fully contoured mat design.
The medal is fixed in the mat window via a fitted slot hidden behind it. With the hidden slot, the raised hanger bar on the back of the medal fits inside allowing the medal to lay flat on the matting. I also add two distinct and angled windows for the two sides of the ribbon. The ribbon is designed to look like classic projector film and I wanted the design to look like the "film" was being fed through one side and out the other.
To give the frame a deep, shadowbox type appearance. Two frame mouldings were stacked and joined. The matting with the medal was set in the bottom moulding while a third piece of brushed aluminum moulding was fitted to the middle piece. Together, they form a unique frame custom to the "5th Anniversary Hollywood Half Marathon Finisher's Medal".
