why metamorphosis in insects is so prevalent. It seems like a very odd thing to come into existence. Why undergo an entire reconstruction of the organism? What advantage does that endow? Why spend that energy?
I learned the answer today. The advantage of undergoing metamorphosis is that it allows the younglings and adults to occupy different ecological niches! UH DOY.
No competition between child and parent! That's incredibly useful. And just another reason why insects are such successful organisms.
PS: I also learned insects that have metamorphosis in their lifecycle are described as holometabolous. Those that do not are described as hemimetabolous.
