Holt is the only in-ground cemetery in New Orleans. It serves as a good reminder of why we usually lay our dead to rest above ground. To re-use some words from my last photo taken here: There's a lot that could be said about this place but I don't know how much it's right for me to say. Holt is the only fully in-ground cemetery in New Orleans. Owned by the city and established in the late 1800s as a potter's field, it's still in use today by those that can't afford anything else. Almost all of the headstones are handmade and the maintenance of the individual graves is up to those who purchased the plots. Because of the water table situation here most graves aren't even dug six feet deep, and families are permitted to re-use them a year and a day after the last interment. It can be a sad place, but at the same time there's some comfort in knowing that everything that's done here is done by the hands of those who loved the ones they buried.
