To be somewhat parched by the heat
And drenched by the rain of life
Fifteen years in Holy Angels’ ISC School had not been a cakewalk for me. I have been parched by the stress and strain of teaching especially at the beginning of my career under the ever-watchful eyes of veterans like Sr. Olive, Sr. Brenda and Sr. Frieda. The preparations for the classes, the struggle to maintain the standards of the school and those set by myself were exhausting. The unit tests, the composition books, the term exams, mark lists, Parent teacher meetings, etc. taxed me initially. But at the end of each year I used to experience an overwhelming sense of achievement and pride at having successfully carried out the entrusted duty. The heat and the rain have both strengthened me as a teacher and moulded me as a person. Holy Angels’_ the name that rouses up feelings of pride, loyalty and belongingness - A temple of learning - that is what HAC is to me even now after 14 years of exit from it .The school which has been a constant source of nourishment to my eager self at the prime of my youth and career. The generous mother in whose lap I have imbibed values and life lessons like the basics of pedagogy, punctuality, sincerity, and the art of dedicating body and soul into one’s duty. The creative years spent there will remain a cherished memory forever. Those days have been a period of incessant learning and absorbing.
Some scenes fly past my inward eye. A Flamenco dancer with her frilled skirt of myriad colours holds the audience spellbound with her mesmerizing performance. She literally throws herself up in the air and dances to the strumming of music. I remember this clearly as I was in charge of writing the commentary. I literally sit there dazed till it gets over…the trendsetting dance from the Tamil movie “Thiruda Thiruda” when the dancer and the dance become the talk of the school and beyond…. A superb, flawless recitation of the lengthy poem Lochinvar with the right accent, intonation and without a second’s hesitation or pause… These and many more bear the inevitable Holy Angels’ stamp in my mind which even the ravages of time can never erase.
The vibrant and enthusiastic performances of the girls at the various functions and competitions, the spirited LA FEST practices, the superior standards of creative writing and the various inter school competitions I have seen have always set the school apart from the rest of the city schools .The batches of students who have passed out have reached high echelons in their career - be it Civil Services, Management, Banking, Health Services, Engineering, Journalism, Movies, Catering -- you name any and an angelite would have carved a niche for herself…a matter of immense pride to the institution , the faculty and to me personally as I attach tremendous value to these little joys which many tend to forget. A doctor at the CGHS dispensary recognizing me by the card shown to her by my husband, A manager leading the team at the all women branch of SBI at Bangalore, An officer at the Income Tax Commissioner’s Office approaching me with a timid voice ‘Ma’am,’ A teacher of English in the land of English … all of them were my kids.
‘Tis past that melancholy dream…………………
For still I seem to love thee more and more……. (William Wordsworth)
Three cheers to the Management, the Principal, the members of the staff, the past and present student community, and my very dear retired friends. Though my career did extend even after I bid good-bye to HAC I can only refer to it as My School… All my soulful prayers and best wishes to Holy Angels’ to reach pinnacles of success and glory.
