Evander Holyfield made the first defence of the IBF, WBC and WBA heavyweight titles that he won from MIke Tyson-conqueror Buster Douglas #OnThisDay in 1991 with an exhaustive hard-fought decision over the pudgy 42-year-old former champion George Foreman in a Battle for the Ages. The 28-year-old champion was a 3-1 betting favourite and had been expected to breeze past his ageing challenger at Atlantic City’s Convention Center in HBO's inaugural pay-per-view venture entitled TVKO. But what a brawl it was. "The fight was a classic battle of two big men taking turns pushing each other to the brink of disaster, only to be saved by their tremendous courage and strong chins," commented Sports Illustrated's Pat Putnam. Judges Eugene Grant, Jerry Roth and Tom Kaczmarek unanimously scored for the champion 116-111, 117-110 and 115-112 respectively. "I couldn't just run him over," Holyfield said in a post-fight news conference. "He hits hard and was able to move me around more than I wanted to." "If you can live, you can dream," Foreman said. "The only thing that stopped me was the fine jaw of Evander Holyfield. But if I had to lose, I'm glad I lost to a fine gentleman. There's no dignity lost. We didn't retreat, did we?" The fight was a huge success financially, becoming for a time the highest-grossing boxing match of all time. The bout brought in approximately $55 million from pay-per-view buys, with 1.45 million American homes purchasing the fight. Also, an additional $8 million was made from the live gate, with an estimated 19,000 fans attending the fight live. Holyfield was guaranteed a hefty $20 million while the punching preacher Foreman was guaranteed $12.5 million. Many thought this would be Foreman's last chance at the Heavyweight championship. Foreman, however, would shock the boxing world over three years later by defeating Michael Moorer to become the oldest Heavyweight champion at age 45. #boxing #BoxingNews #HolyfieldForeman #EvanderHolyfield #GeorgeForeman #Legends (at Atlantic City Convention Center)
