I was wondering if you or any of your followers know if a Brother MFC-J985DW Printer can be used for sticker printing? I want to try printing my own to save money from shipping since I only want really small quantities like 5 (&hand-cutting them since I'm literally too poor for Silhouette cutters) for a local con, but I usually see most people use an HP or Canon printer, and never any Brother printers ;-; Also, are there any guides/videos for setting stickers up in Photoshop before printing?
Nattosoup: Any printer that can take sticker paper can print your stickers- whether or not they’ll be at a quality you’re happy to sell is another question. If you can get just a couple sheets of the sticker paper you want to use as a test, that would be a great way to dip your toe in the water. I’ve used my old, now dead Brother printer to print stickers, I’ve used my Canon Pixma Pro 9000 to print stickers, I’ve used my cheap Dell toner printer (sub $100 at most) to print stickers- really what tends to make the difference is the quality paper you use. And despite owning a Cricut, I still cut my stickers by hand, because with three cats and a tiny apartment, I just don’t have the space to set it up, and I’ve cut stickers by hand for years, so you’re in fine company. And if you don’t like your printers quality, you can always take your files to OfficeDepot/Max and have them print them on sticker paper for you.
As for setting them up in PS, I don’t have any videos to link you, although I’m sure someone on Youtube has done it, but what I do is:
Size my image to the size I want it to print
Create a new doc at the size of my printer paper (usually 8.5x11). Set it to RGB (for print)
Drag my sized sticker onto my new doc. Make color adjustments if necessary.
Merge layers until you have your BG layer and your sticker layer. Copy sticker layer.
Drag over and tile.
Since you’re handcutting, you’re going to want to leave yourself room for a border, as kiss cutting is crazy talk for hand cut stickers.
Best of luck! I think you’ve got this.
I didn’t design this model, but printed it on a 3D printer. It’s a character from Monument Valley and I got the file from here .

My friend and i are looking to make our stickers better quality but still print at home. What paper/brands would you guys recommend for better quality stickers that won't smug?
Nattosoup: Switch your printer. A toner based printer won’t smudge because the ‘ink’ is toner particles that have been heat bonded onto the paper. Waterproof, alcohol marker proof, and there are small color toner printers available for under $100.
This is the printer I use.
Without knowing what paper you use, I use LD Sticker paper with my toner printer. It says for InkJet, but I have good results with my laserjet printer. Oh hey look who has a video on printing stickers at home!
Dot Matrix?
I’m shopping for a new printer. Mine has developed a disturbing tendency to have paper jams and it give me error messages even when it’s printing fine. But as I scrolled looking at new models, I had a throwback thought to my first printer – which was dot matrix. Ah the good old days! My first printer was actually more of a typewriter than what we would call a printer now. It had a full keyboard…
