Yesterday I was thinking about the role I play as a teacher and this is what came to me. _ I am a fire-starter, but you, as the student are the one who has to burn. _ Do you understand what I’m saying? It’s a metaphor, obviously. I am not going to actually light anyone on fire in class, just to be clear. But I do hope to be the spark of a mighty blaze in the inner world of your own awakening. The idea that something I do would ignite your own fire also includes your agency as a student, meaning that, although I as the teacher may play a role, it’s really all about you and your journey. _ This path has revealed the light within me shine with such brightness. It will do the same for you. #repost @kinoyoga 🌷 Everything is what it is. Until you label it good or bad. Duality and division begins in your mind and then spreads outward to section off the world into us and them, this and that. But really, underneath all our thoughts there is just energy. You have the power to create angels and devils with your perspective. While some things and certainly some people are easier to label as good or bad, you play a bigger role in your experience than you think. Take Backbending as an example. If you fear backbends and tell a story about how terrifying they are, it’s most likely that you’ll be hesitant and unhappy practicing them. But if you tell another story about how you enjoy the challenge and are growing from the experience, your backbends may not be deeper but you’ll probably be happier while you’re practicing. Quarantine with a view 🌴 _ Forward bends got comfortable for me after a few years of practice. People assume I was born like this, but let me tell it’s the result of lots of practice. One thing I’ve learned from yoga is that nothing is impossible. There is a way through everything that leads to peace. But the orb is rarely what you think it will be or what you want it to be. Sometimes the hardest thing about spiritual practice is starting. You think you can’t meditate because your mind is too busy and your thinking about too much stuff. But that’s exactly when meditation can help you the most. People think that they have to wait until they’re strong and flexible before starting yoga. But if you’re stiff and weak, yoga has so much to offer you on the path to healing. It’s just about starting. Metta, loving-kindness works the same way. You may feel like you’re dark and twisted to offer love and kindness to yourself or the world. But it’s actually when you’re suffering the most that you have access to the raw potential of your emotions and can benefit the most from practicing metta. So, in other words, there’s no excuse. Just start. Get on your mat. Sit on your cushion. Just start. _ I am teaching a special class— Moon Day Metta this week, Wednesday (New Moon) at 1 pm EST. Fall in love with life over and over again. Hate spreads, but so does love. And nothing, not even bitter vitriol, flagrant lies, or abuse compares to the vastness of the power of love. _ Love will kneel down to the most lowly part, pick up the broken pieces of a dream, and put it all back together, stronger the second (or third or fourth) time. _ Love keeps all its promises, lights the path through darkness, carries your load when you would otherwise be crushed by it, constantly working for you, even when you do not see it. _ You think you need “get” love. But that’s not possible. Love is who you are, just as love is the very fabric that makes up the heartbeat of the universe. When you remove everything you are not, the only thing that remains is the natural, vast, open, expanse of compassion, kindness and love. Find love and you have found yourself. Yoga, and of course life really, in the age of coronavirus rests on such uncertain terms. I want to hear from you— _ How have you been impacted and what tools are you most relying on these days? And, how are you feeling? Do you feel a sense of loss or grief, or is it more anxiety and worry? Are you able to maintain your practice? If so, how has it changed? If you’re a yoga teacher, have you been able to take your teaching online? _ To be clear, COVID-19 has disrupted so many aspects of life that it is hard for everyone not to crumble under the sheer uncertainly of it all. But, no disturbance of normal life compares in any way to those individuals whose lives are at stake now. The real cost of these challenging times is felt in the staggering loss of life. Current statistics show that one person dies of coronavirus related sickness every eight minutes in NYC—and we are not even at the peak of the virus according to epidemiologists and experts. There are those whose lives are on the line at the frontlines of effort to overcome the outbreak—doctors, nurses and other health care workers. And those whose jobs have been deemed essential—people working in grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, restaurants that still do take-out and delivery, police officers, military personnel and numerous other people who literally risk their lives so that some semblance of society remains while the rest of us shelter in place. So, let us just pause and reflect upon the enormity of the situation, give thanks to those on the front lines and send our prayers of healing to all those whom are sick, exposed to the virus or testing positive right now. Shoulderstand is foundational yoga pose from all traditions. Inversions like this have soothing effects on the nervous system when held for at least one minute. The Sanskrit name is Sarva-anga-asana which refers to the idea that every part of the body is being toned and utilized in this pose, which is very rare. Most other poses target specific areas. At the same time, this is a challenging asana and if there are any pre-existing conditions in the neck, shoulder or upper spine, then Sarvangasana might not be recommend (a modification can be practiced instead). _ What do you think?
