Davekat Masterpost

Introduction: So I’ve been shipping this since I read Karkat’s first pesterlog. Was like “Oh maaaaan. This guy. I need this guy to talk to Dave, because that, my friends, would be an interesting conversation.” It just seemed like an interesting dynamic to observe and thus my otp became a crack ship and i cried (two characters who hadn’t even talked yet!). So I’m super happy with recent developments and I’ve been working on this here masterlist of sorts. This is gonna be an in-depth analysis starting with individual characters and ending with their relationship as a whole, plus every link for every moment they shared in-comic. Enjoy.

Part 1:

Character Analysis 1 (in order of appearance): Dave Strider

Hobbies and introduction

Inferred personality and life: Dave was abused by his Bro until he was 13, as such he does not like fighting, seeing blood, or hearing metal noises. His planet, The Land of Heat and Clockwork, has many qualities of the things he is negatively sensitive to. He is constantly worried about appearing cool. He wears his shades and can put out an aloof front to hide his emotions and any shortcomings/vulnerabilities he possesses. Dave sometimes makes misjudgments about his friends. However, all of his friends can see through his mask and they are fully aware he’s not actually as cool as he claims to be. Rose constantly calls out his Freudian slips. John tells him his rapping is dorky. Jade uses sarcasm to express how he’s “soooooo coooooool”. He is incredibly impatient (He slices through the fake first name given to him, he has to wait for his artifact to hatch, and he breaks swords rather than finding a proper way to remove them, corresponding to the lesson of patience being taught to him through his aspect of Time.). Dave is also extremely intelligent, but more so in a creative way. He is verbose and seems to be naturally gifted in a literary sense. He creates art that has developed its own cult following in both the alpha and beta-verses. Dave is also extremely friendly one-on-one. In group settings, because he has an audience, he tends to make a fuss and act out/gets on others’ nerves, quite possibly for attention or just to assert his dominance, as his bro has taught him to do. However, alone, he is fairly amiable. The birds that invade his home believe his room to be a safe haven and he isn’t registered as a real threat, despite accidentally flinging a blade through one of their fellow flock members. He also seems to crave physical intimacy with others, but only allows himself to be that way around those he becomes completely comfortable with (examples: Mayor , Karkat, Dirk). He is also highly expressive and practically bursting with his own emotions as shown by his constant Freudian slips, almost as if his personality just wants to break through his poker faced façade. He has a major hero complex, despite not liking the idea of heroism, and believes he has to save everybody, which is reflective of his knight class.

Character Development: His impatience is sort of resolved in his ability to control his aspect. In the doomed timeline he develops a disdain for his time powers and chooses not to use them. In the alpha timeline he appears to know when he should fight and when he should fall back, a much more balanced resolution. He no longer views heroism as a point he has to reach. He is healing from the toxic masculinity that plagued him in his childhood, but at least now he recognizes it. Dave is more open about his feelings and allows his emotions (and Freudian slips) to flow freely. He has become more open minded, learning to accept and even quite possibly adopt troll romance, and is even comfortable enough to accept his sexuality. He likes the idea of having a mother and still has bitter feelings about how his friends had guardians that loved them.

Character Analysis 2: Karkat Vantas

Hobbies and Introduction

Inferred Personality and Life: Karkat, much like Dave, is impatient, slicing through the silly name you attempt to enter for him. His planet, The Land of Pulse and Haze, also hits him in a negatively sensitive spot, as it reminds him of his mutant red blood. This taunting aspect of both Dave and Karkat’s planets may be a running theme with knight classes. Karkat also puts up a front, but where Dave is cool and composed, Karkat is loud, obnoxious, and ornery. This is meant to be a huge distraction to his shortcomings, his mutant blood, and to make others believe he is not vulnerable. Although it could come off as harsh when he speaks, he is not actually verbally abusive. Much like how Dave’s friends don’t actually buy into him being “cool”, none of Karkat’s friends take his bullshit seriously, and if he ever goes too far with the way he speaks, he immediately shows remorse.  He is also extremely kind and empathetic. He forgives Gamzee for his murderspree and attempts to keep peace on the meteor by entering a moirailiegience with him. And even after Jack has stabbed him multiple times he is still ready to be friends, which correlates to his Blood aspect’s ability to form bonds. He is always there for his friends to depend on when they need to vent. He is also shown to take a high level of interest in romance, quite possibly because of the concept of strong bonds surrounding it, which reflects back to his aspect, and he is the go to guy for dating advice among his party. However, he always seems to have problems with his own quadrants. He appears to have the Sufferer’s trait of panquadrancy, in which a troll can have one person fulfilling all of their quadrants, but it has yet to be completely confirmed. Karkat has a huge leader complex, which explains his guilt for letting everyone down when he thinks they’ve failed, an aspect that can be traced back to his class as a knight, as he believes he must shoulder all of blame from his and the kid’s failed sessions. A lot of his insecurities have piled up to the point where he hates himself and almost thinks he’s his own kismesis.

Character Development: Karkat is still loud and quite childish with his outbursts and tantrums. However, he is also learning when to pull back before he says too much and has shown the capability to calm down before he “flies off the handle”. His leader complex has died down to a practically nonexistent state, much like Dave’s idea of heroism. He is still willing to die for his friends and fight alongside them, but he is reluctant to try and guide them in any way post retcon. This changes when he decides he wants to lead the ghost army into battle against Lord English. However, he is the first to die, proving that his strength is not in fighting, but rather pacifying. He learns how to choose his battles when he picks a fight with Clover, and then uses his own methods to incapacitate him. Karkat’s entire arc was about learning not to overstep or understep, but finding a balance where he could utilize his skills accordingly.

  Part 5: Relationship Analysis

Taking a close look at their personalities and behaviors, you’d see that Karkat and Dave actually have many parallels in personality and in their development as characters. Terezi even tells Dave that they are really similar, so it’s no wonder that after befriending each other they became something more. Dave and Karkat’s character growth was also positively influenced by their relationship. Dave learned to be more outspoken with his emotions, allowed himself to feel vulnerable, learned how his Bro was abusive because he spent time with people that loved him, and he also came to terms with his sexuality. Karkat has also learned to cool it with his anger and to not immediately fly into a rage. Dave helps him, telling him when he needs to relax. They make each other better. Their relationship standards also fit. Because of Dave’s reluctance to share Terezi with Gamzee in the pre-retcon timeline (even if he says humans could probably do quadrants post-retcon) and Karkat’s desire to place one person in all of his quadrants, they’d also be suitable to each other’s romantic criteria. Probably the most interesting point to their relationship, though, is how balanced they are in their power dynamic. Both can be combative and verbally aggressive. However, they can take what the other says and counter with their own rebuttal. They bicker, but it shows they aren’t afraid to share their opinions with each other. THIS IS NOT AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP. ONE DOES NOT HOLD CONTROL OVER THE OTHER. Even with Dave’s god tier powers, which Karkat has explained makes him feel inadequate for not having, there isn’t much of a gap. The fact that he can even tell Dave that not being god tier makes him feel awful is a huge deal for someone that can’t easily express vulnerability. I’d even go so far as to say that this is the healthiest canon ship in Homestuck.
