Three methods of Data Extraction! Table Capture extension on Chrome, Tabula, and the XML data import in google sheets.
Table Capture picks up on if table are present on a page, and if they are, allows you to copy the tables and then you can simply paste them without completely destroying the formatting of the table you wanted.
Tabula allows you to import a PDF as long as it is text-based, or converted to text using adobe acrobat pro, and will locate tables in the documents using either white space in tables to determine columns and rows, or looking for lines separating components of the table. I simply imported a paper (which I have to read and present for Marine Ecology later in the semester), and hit auto-detect tables, made sure it had selected the right portions, and then exported it as a CSV file.
The ImportXML function in Google Sheets allowed me to make a table out of all of the different classes in the biology department here at Temple, when the courses are generally offered, and a course description, which can be found on the Bulletin site. To gather and organize the data in the way I wanted, in the function I included the URL I wanted to pull data from and then used the inspect tool in chrome to determine the path elements I wanted to pull for each column of the table.

Homework #4
I plan to refine my current body of work over this summer. There is a lot of work to be done conceptually and in practice. I want to accomplish a strict set of research in the field performance art and the body. Through all of my studio visits I have been given a robust list of artists and writers to study. The end goal of this research is that it will ultimately inform my current body of work.
I’ve already allocated studio time into my internship schedule this summer. I will be working Monday through wednesday, leaving thursday and friday free to spend time in my studio, got to LA for exhibition openings, and gather materials. I don’t know where my research will take me so I can’t foresee the materials i will be integrating into my work, but i’m confident that I will dedicate enough time to practice.
Monster (Project 2) First Draft
With what I have done so far, I’m happy with the body and head of the monster. What I still need to complete after this draft would be replace the whistle for something else that can symbolize “motivated”, fix the edges on parts of my monster such as the right lightbulb and eyes, and to draw and scan images to add to my monster. Another possible fix I may make would be to change certain colors in my monster and their placements.
