If I had the time to improve data story II, I would spend more time on the PA-South Korea graphic and put more information into it. Due to trying to get the map how I wanted it, it got pushed back a bit. Additionally I’d want to take a closer look at the code for the map and make sure the small overlap at certain sizes went away.

Javascript:
The intro to javascript covered how to print things out to the console, make comments, the different types of data, how to do math operations, concatenate strings, identify properties, and use methods to alter whatever is being printed to the console.
The variables lesson showed how to declare variables and the let and const features to declare more specifically. It also noted that if a variable has not been initialized are categorized under the type undefined.
Data Story II Pitch
Headline: The Invasion of the Spotted Lanternfly( working title)
News hook: Since 2014 the Spotted Lanternfly has invaded Pennsylvania it has severely harmed PA agriculture. Beyond what should initially cause alarm for citizens, they are obviously a nuisance. We are currently in a quarantine over 13 counties, an important legal distinction. Compliance with a quarantine is crucial and violations may result in fines and penalties.
Nutgraf:Over the course of 2015-2017 the spotted lantern fly has been collected by both scientists and citizens, and the data display a decrease in the number of records collected. This may be a positive sign, showing the positive effects of the quarantine which will be detailed further. That being said, they are still a major nuisance.
Data sources: Matthew Helmus, PA dept of agriculture- not allowed to post raw data online so not linking it just yet.

Activity in class:
I completed the formatting for different devices, so that the map-wrap maps split when tablet sized into two rows and disappear entirely when phone sized. I then created a github account to host my reverse engineering page.

Earthquake data visualization for some areas which are picking up in seismic activity where there was once none
Homework 14
Thursday’s class was focused on tidying up the desktop css for the reverse engineering and beginning the tablet styles. We gave max-widths to some features and used floats to get things to stay side by side instead of stacked on top of each other, as well as clear to clear the floats and make sure formatting for everything after is correct. As seen with the five smaller maps, we have begun the tablet css, and it has separated the five into a group of three and a group of two. This will be fixed next class.
