I couldn’t sleep last night so I conjured a HKSG gakuen AU in my head

Like I can imagine that SG would be the seemingly flawless class prefect that’s held in high regard. Stylish appearance, polite demeanour, super high grades, all that stuff. On the other hand, HK would be playing hooky half the time because he hates being bored in class. And when he does show up for class, he’s probably going to be knocked out cold snoring on his desk.

Now you see, if it’s just that, the class prefect won’t have a problem with him. At most he would just subtly give him the side eye and ignore his existence. He has better things to do than to bother with a typical delinquent. Except, this one isn’t a typical delinquent. Nope.

This delinquent apparently has some brain cells rattling in there because he’s consistently SG’s sole obstacle to topping the class when result slips come out. Every single time, just when SG thinks he has it in the bag, the result slips come out and they’re always tied for first. Every. Single. Time.

On the outside, he would continue to smile politely as he warmly congratulates HK on the grade.

On the inside, he’ll be like: knncb does this pai kiah even study or what?!?!

HK knows. Even if that smile doesn’t even so much as falter, from one fellow poker face to another, he knows. And he finds this absolutely hilarious. He’ll keep saying things like “Wow, guess I got, like, seriously lucky again. Nice~” This only serves to make SG even madder and it just evolves into both of them struggling to cling onto their respective facades to not let the other see what their really feeling.

And yet, unbeknownst to anybody (for HK would never tell anyone), once the last light goes out in his house and everybody is asleep, that’s when he cracks open his eyes, turns on the nightlight and crams deep into the night. It’s tough work for a delinquent after all hahahahahhaha

It would definitely be easier for HK to just study in class instead of staying up all night. However, it won’t be as funny to score top of the class without the lovely class prefect trying desperately not to let his murderous thoughts show. Hence the act continues ad infinitum (until one of these losers breaks their act first at least hahaha)

I saw you are a HKSG fan! What can you tell me about them? What are your fave aspects of the ship, any canon interactions you really like, etc. I want to try appreciating this ship 8)

Well firstly they actually have no canon interaction, I'm basing this entire ship off vibes and irl culture stuff. Here in HK we have memes about hating on SG but it's just business rivalry stuff yknow. They're like enemies and lovers. Simultaneously.

Mostly I like it for the dynamic. SG seems like a someone with a witty or "smart-ass" personality who can also be bold or bossy, but HK is more toned-down and quiet/stoic but still possesses the business smarts and is probably slight annoyed (lovingly) from SG's quipping but he really doesn't mind, and they're like Yin Yang they fill each other's gaps and compliment each other.

Thirdly have you thought about the amount of potential this ship has for AUs. Idc what AU you put this pairing in they will work anyway. I have quite a few fic ideas and began writing them a long time ago but I never got around to finishing them because school workload is trying to crush me

Also I really like the cultural and historical background of this ship, they're both former British colonies and they're two of the four Asian Tigers, they're both finacial centres and both of them have a prominent lifestyle centered around grinding and earning money, and I think these are the things that unite them despite their differences : )

I have never heard of this ship and don't have much knowledge on Singapore and Hong Kong in Hetalia so I can't really make a judgement
