In all my interpretations of gil pairs is that it always involves the other part of the equation being subject to gil's intense undivided and unwavering attention. Which means he either: expresses his loyalty or devotion to you to the point of obssessive constriction OR puts you as the ultimate rival to whatever game or machination he wants to best you in. And it swings from each polar side like a pendulum.

And once the other side of the pair has begun to be accustomed to it - has began to understand gil and his drive for power, glory, immortality - he drops them. Like a hot potato. Not because hes grown bored of them, he just found someone else to obssess over. And the other party is treated with just an amicable indifference. No more of gil's visits, or mind games, or random challenges. Just "hey," "its been a while," "have u seen xyz?" As if gil didnt chase them, didnt run away from them, didnt trade words or swords.

The worst part of being with gil is watching gil only having two people he has consistently given this type of attention to: a mortal king who should have just been a memory, and Ludwig.
