on the topic of the pow post you just reblogged- the guy who really went hard to make that A Thing was named bo gritz and he actually led a squad of, as he called them, 'drifters, dreams, and a psychic' into laos bc he wanted to cross the border into vietnam to rescue the pows. that didnt exist. william shatner gave him money to do this. the only pow they saved was one of their own guys who got kidnapped by a laotion militia. this all happened in 1981 or 1982 i cant remember which year exactly. they based rambo 2 on this mission

i hope this is not an odd question but ive noticed that a lot of jewelry from swana cultures has what seem to be spikes on it. certain types of bracelets and earrings and necklaces sometimes have little points on them that remind me a bit of the spikes on goth or punk jewelry. i was wondering if you know why that is? ive always thought its super cool!

I think overall they're speculated to represent fertility in one way or another, at least this is the case with the bracelets.

These are some from Oman, my favorite fact about them is that the name actually depends on the bosses (protrusions). Bracelets with smaller, more rounded spikes are called banjiri bu nujum (bracelets with stars), and the sharper ones with single, double, or triple rows are banjiri bu shawkah (bracelets with thorns).

These pics are from the Oman Virtual Museum - a very good source because most of the books they reference are not in print anymore.

The theory is that the bumps or spikes represent breasts, which makes sense given that another thing they're called banjiri mefolic (young girl with round breasts). Pretty similar to how they're used and thought of in Palestine.

The top is a wide haydari bracelet, and the bottom two are haydari bracelets with eye-like protrusions (from the Palestine Museum). These were worn in pairs - either one on each wrist or two on one wrist, and often indicated the wearer was breastfeeding.

These are some more examples from Egypt (specifically Nubian Egyptians - this picture is from the traditional jewelry of Egypt by Azza Fahmy) and from South-Eastern Morocco. Spiked bracelets from the Maghreb are some of the only ones I've seen theorized to be used also as a defensive weapon for women, but nothing super concrete. Getting hit with one of these would definitely hurt.

Some other things with spikes I can think of aside from the bracelets:

This is a necklace from Palestine called sha'riyeh (literally means noodles). Why does it look like that with the little spikes? I honestly have no idea, its both funny and sad but I think a lot of this stuff originally had some kind of meaning at some point in history, and while that meaning faded, the people still wearing it are like "that's cool, let's keep it. dunno what it means though".

Also from Oman, these are some pointy earrings (Ghalamiyat) from the bedouin people in the north and center of the country. The little spikes around the center are an allusion to thorns and the general leaf shape and berry shapes at the bottom are regarded as being a fertility symbol as well.

A spiked headdress I also think of is this one from Souss, Morocco, worn by people from the Ait Baamrane. I've only seen it in passing by people that the 'horns' are also a fertility symbol but I have no verifiable source, just seeing other people discuss it online so take that with a grain of salt. I am unsure of the name of this particular headdress as well, so if any Imazighen from Morocco see this and know, please feel free to comment or reblog!

There's definitely more I'm probably forgetting in this moment but when in doubt, the answer is probably fertility. I appreciate the question! Thank you for asking and it's actually something I've wondered about for awhile. There may be some link between punk/goth jewelry and our spiked jewelry but I don't have any source for it. This might be a whole research project on its own honestly!
