âŻTsukishima Kei*â .â â§
The Karasuno gym echoed with the sound of volleyballs smacking the floor.
You sat on the sidelines, scrolling on your phone as you waited for practice to end. It was supposed to be quiet timeâuntil you noticed Tsukishimaâs gaze flick toward you for what had to be the fifth time in two minutes.
When you caught him looking, his eyes darted away, and he muttered something under his breath before adjusting his glasses like that would hide anything.
You smiled. You knew that look. It was his âIâm pretending Iâm not softâ face.
Practice ended soon after, and as the rest of the team collapsed into laughter and chatter, you stood to hand him a towel. âGood job today, Kei.â
He took it with a noncommittal hum, then looked down at youâtall, tired, and pretending to be uninterested. âYou didnât have to wait.â
âI wanted to,â you said, cheerful as ever.
That earned you an eye roll and a faint flush creeping up his neck. âYouâre ridiculous.â
Before you could retort, you felt his hand reach outâand then, pinch.
Right on your cheek.
You gasped. âKei!â
He didnât even look embarrassed. âWhat? Youâre being smug.â
âI wasnâtâhey!â You swatted his hand away, cheeks puffing up. âThatâs mean.â
He gave the smallest, most traitorous smile. âYou look like a hamster when youâre mad.â
That, unfortunately, was the exact moment Hinata and Kageyama turned around.
âTSUKISHIMAâS SMILING!â Hinata shouted, pointing dramatically.
âDid he justâpinch her cheek?â Kageyama blinked like he couldnât believe it.
In an instant, the whole team looked over. Tanaka whistled low. âYo, Tsukki, didnât know you had it in you!â
Nishinoya threw a towel over his shoulder, grinning. âSo soft! So romantic!â
Tsukishima froze mid-glare, then sighed so deeply you could almost feel the soul leaving his body. âYouâre all idiots.â
âOhhh, look, heâs blushing!â Sugawara teased, voice full of amusement.
âIâm not blushing,â Tsukishima said, adjusting his glasses againâwhich of course made everyone laugh harder.
You tried not to giggle, but when he shot you a lookâthat mix of mock-annoyed and secretly fondâyou couldnât help it.
He leaned closer, muttering under his breath, âYouâre enjoying this way too much.â
âMaybe,â you whispered back, âbut you started it.â
His eyes narrowedâbut that small, reluctant smile was back.
This time, when he pinched your other cheek, it was so gentle you almost didnât feel it.
âFine,â he murmured. âNow weâre even.â
âStinkyshimaâs being sweet again!â Hinata yelled.
Tsukishima groaned. âIâm transferring schools.â
But as you followed him out of the gym, still giggling, he reached back without looking and laced his fingers with yoursâquiet, casual, and perfectly him.
âŻKuroo TetsurĆ*â .â â§
The hallway between classes was noisy, a mix of laughter and sneakers squeaking against tile.
You were standing by your locker, trading textbooks, when a pair of voices drifted over from behind you.
âSheâs cute, I guess,â one girl said, tone just a little too light.
âYeah,â another replied, âif you like that soft kind of cute. Kuroo must have a type.â
You froze, pretending to keep flipping through your bag.
They didnât stop.
âI mean, sheâs sweet, but imagine trying to keep up with him. Heâs the captainâhe could date anyone.â
The laughter that followed was quiet but sharp enough to cut.
You took a slow breath and shut your locker, willing your face not to show anything. You didnât want to give them the satisfaction.
âHey sweetheart~â
Kurooâs voice came from behind youâsmooth, lazy, the kind that made people turn even before they realized it was him.
He had his hands in his pockets, hair still a little messy from the early-morning practice, eyes narrowing just slightly as he looked between you and the girls.
âMorning,â he said easily. âEverything okay here?â
The girls straightened up fast. âO-oh! Kuroo-san, we were justââ
He tilted his head, smile polite but not exactly friendly. âJust what?â
Silence.
They mumbled something about class starting and disappeared down the hall, their laughter suddenly nervous.
Kuroo waited until they were gone before turning to you. His expression softened immediately. âHey.â
You sighed. âThey werenât worth it.â
He frowned. âMaybe not. But you are.â
You blinked up at him, caught off guard.
Before you could answer, he stepped closer and wrapped his arms around youâall warmth and broad shoulders and the faint scent of detergent and gym dust.
He hugged you tight, like he was trying to make up for every harsh word in the world.
You mumbled into his chest, âTetsurĆ, people are staring.â
âGood,â he said without letting go. âThen theyâll know youâre mine.â
You laughed softly. âYouâre impossible.â
He leaned back just enough to meet your eyes. âYouâre the best thing that ever happened to me. Donât let anyone make you forget that, okay?â
You nodded, smiling despite yourself.
He grinnedâthat classic Kuroo grin, the one that managed to be both mischievous and tender. âThatâs better. Now, come on. Iâll walk you to class before someone else tries to talk nonsense.â
He laced his fingers through yours as you walked, squeezing lightly every few stepsâhis quiet way of saying Iâve got you.
When you reached your classroom door, he gave you one more quick hugâstill too tight, still perfect.
âLater, at practice,â he whispered with a grin.
And as he disappeared down the hall, head held high, you realized the ache in your chest had been replaced by something else entirelyâthe steady warmth of being loved out loud.
âŻSugawara KĆushi*â .â â§
The classroom was quiet, except for the soft tick of the clock and the sound of papers being shuffled.
You were supposed to be studying for midterms, but your head was already drooping onto your notebook.
Sugawara looked up from his seat across from you. âHey,â he said, voice low and amused, âyouâve been staring at that same page for ten minutes.â
You groaned, pressing your forehead to the desk. âBecause math hates me.â
He laughed softly. âMath doesnât hate you. It just wants attention.â
You peeked up at him. âYouâre too cheerful for someone who finished everything already.â
He shrugged, smiling. âIâm just happy I get to keep you company.â
You rolled your eyes, but your cheeks warmed anyway. âSmooth, Sugawara.â
âWho, me?â he said, mock-offended. âIâm honest.â
He reached into his bag and pulled out a small container. âAlso, I brought snacks. You didnât eat lunch, right?â
You blinked. âHow do you always know?â
âIâm a setter,â he said simply. âI pay attention.â
Inside the container were onigiri and a few pieces of cut fruit. Nothing fancy, but it smelled goodâlike home.
He slid it toward you. âEat while you study. Youâll focus better.â
You hesitated. âI shouldnât. Iâve been trying toââ
ââskip meals?â he interrupted gently. âThatâs not a good plan.â
You frowned a little. âI just⊠feel like I should eat less sometimes.â
Sugawara leaned back in his chair, eyes soft but serious. âYou know, I think about this a lot,â he said. âHow everyoneâs built different. On the court, too. Itâs not about being the same; itâs about being strong in your own way.â
You looked at him, unsure what to say.
He smiled againâthat quiet, patient smile that always made people calm down without realizing it. âYouâve got this warmth that makes people relax around you. Donât lose that trying to be something else.â
You laughed weakly. âYouâre too good at this.â
He grinned, eyes glinting with humor. âYeah, itâs my secret skill. Works better than any serve.â
You finally took a bite of the food, and his expression softened even more. âSee? You look happier already.â
âStop staring,â you said, embarrassed.
âCanât,â he said simply. âYouâre cute when you eat.â
You froze. âKĆushi!â
He chuckled, leaning forward on his elbows. âWhat? Itâs true.â
You buried your face in your hands. âYouâre impossible.â
He tilted his head. âMaybe. But I make you smile, so it's a good thing.â
The clock ticked on quietly, and sunlight drifted across the desks.
You finished eating, and Sugawara gently took the empty container back. âThank you,â you said softly.
He gave that same warm smileâthe one that always made you feel like you were exactly where you were supposed to be. âAnytime. I like taking care of my most beloved person after all.â
You tried to protest, but he was already back to his notes, pencil tapping rhythmically.
Somehow, the room felt lighterâand so did your chest.
âŻNishinoya YĆ«*â .â â§
Practice had ended, and the gym lights glowed soft and yellow.
Most of the team had already gone home, but Nishinoya was still thereâsprinting after every stray ball like it was a championship match.
âYĆ«,â you called, sitting on the sidelines. âPractice is over.â
He turned, grinning. âNot for me! A true guardian never rests!â
You sighed, smiling despite yourself. âYouâre going to wear yourself out.â
He jogged over, hair wild, cheeks flushed. âNah! This is peak form!â Then he noticed the water bottle in your hands and blinked. âWaitâdid you stay the whole time?â
You shrugged. âI like watching you play.â
That froze him mid-movement. âWhaâ! Really?!â
He nearly tripped over a ball before catching himself, cheeks turning pink. âI meanâuhâcool! Yeah! I play great, right?â
You laughed. âVery great.â
He grinned so wide it almost hurt to look at. âYou always know how to boost me up, huh?â
Before you could reply, your stomach let out a small, unmistakable growl.
He blinked, then looked horrified on your behalf. âDidâdid you justâ?!â
You covered your face. âOh my god, Yuu, please donât make it a big dealââ
He threw both arms in the air. âAHA! Thatâs my cue!â
You groaned. âWhat cueââ
But he was already digging through his bag, producing two rice balls wrapped in foil. âSaved these from lunch! I knew Iâd find a use for âem.â
You blinked. âYou⊠packed extra?â
He puffed out his chest proudly. âFor emergencies! And feeding you totally counts as one.â
He tossed one your way. âCatch!â
You caught it, still laughing. âYouâre ridiculous.â
âRidiculously thoughtful,â he said, flashing a grin before biting into his own.
You sat side by side on the gym floor, eating in comfortable quiet for a few minutes.
Then you mumbled, âYou didnât have to share, you know.â
âYeah, but I wanted to.â
You hesitated. âYou donât think I eat too much?â
He froze mid-bite. âWhat? Why would Iâ?!â
Then his voice went full volume again. âHey! You think thatâs bad? I eat, like, six of these a day!â
You laughed. âThatâs because you run more than anyone here.â
He waved a hand. âNah, nah, nah. Listen.â
He looked at you, suddenly serious in that rare Nishinoya way. âYouâve got the best laugh in the world. If food makes you happy, then eat all you want. Anyone who says otherwise can fight me.â
Your heart twistedâbecause he meant it. He always did.
You smiled softly. âYouâre too nice, YĆ«.â
He blinked, then scratched the back of his neck, blushing. âNah. You just make it easy.â
You leaned your shoulder against his. âThank you.â
He grinned, resting his head lightly against yours. âAnytime.â
The gym lights flickered once before shutting off.
He jumped up dramatically. âLetâs go, darling! Iâll walk you homeâbodyguard duty!â
You rolled your eyes but couldnât hide your smile. âYou really donât have an off switch, do you?â
He laughed, throwing his bag over his shoulder. âNot when it comes to you!â
And as you both stepped into the cool evening air, he started humming loudlyâoff-key, but happyâbecause that was just Nishinoya: a storm of energy who somehow always made the world feel lighter.
âŻAkaashi Keiji*â .â â§
The gym was almost empty.
Bokuto had run off after practice, leaving his towel and half of his energy behind.
Akaashi sat on the bench, still in his practice shirt, unwrapping a small bento box.
You were sitting nearby, looking at your phone, stomach rumbling just a little.
He noticed. Of course he noticedâhe noticed everything.
âYou didnât eat again,â he said simply.
You looked up, startled. âIâm fine, really.â
He opened his bento, lifting out a set of chopsticks. âYou said that yesterday too.â
You tried to smile. âI just⊠wasnât hungry.â
Akaashiâs eyebrows rose slightly. âYou forget that Iâve known you long enough to recognize when youâre lying.â
Before you could answer, he shifted closer and held out a biteâa little roll of rice and egg, still warm.
You blinked. âKeiji, I can feed myselfââ
âI know,â he said quietly. âBut if I do it, youâll actually eat.â
You hesitated, and then sighed in defeat. âYouâre stubborn.â
âOnly when it comes to you,â he said.
You leaned forward and took the bite, trying not to look at him.
He smiled a littleânot teasing, not smug, just soft.
The kind of smile that said thank you for trusting me.
âBetter?â he asked.
You nodded, chewing. âYou cook well.â
âMy mom helped,â he admitted. âBut I arranged it.â
You laughed. âOf course you did. Precise as ever.â
He glanced down at the box. âYou always make sure everyone else is okay. Let me make sure you are too.â
That stopped you for a moment.
You stared at him, and he met your gaze with that same steady calm he always had on courtâfocused, quiet, sure.
âYou donât have to take care of me all the time,â you murmured.
âI know,â he said again. âBut I want to.â
He offered another bite, and when you took it, his hand brushed your cheek just brieflyâa small, accidental touch that made something warm flutter in your chest.
When the box was empty, he packed it neatly away, wiped his hands, and looked at you with that thoughtful tilt of his head.
âYou shouldnât apologize for eating,â he said. âYou should just enjoy it. You look happiest when you do.â
Your cheeks burned, and you laughed softly. âYou really know how to make things sound sweet, huh?â
He smiled again, eyes half-lidded, gentle. âOnly when I mean them.â
Outside, the sunset painted the hallway gold.
Akaashi stood, offering his hand to help you up, and when you took it, he didnât let go right away.
âThank you,â you whispered.
âFor what?â he asked.
âFor seeing me.â
He squeezed your hand onceâquiet, sure, like everything he did.
âThatâs easy,â he said. âYouâre worth looking at.â
âŻLev Haiba*â .â â§
Lev was pouting again.
He stood in the middle of the Nekoma gym, holding a volleyball like it had personally offended him. âI donât get it!â he said, loudly enough that Yaku groaned from the sidelines. âIt went straight up! Why didnât it go forward?â
âBecause,â Yaku snapped, âyou hit it wrong, you giraffe!â
Lev blinked down at him, confused. âI did what I always do!â
âThatâs the problem!â
You bit your lip, trying not to laugh as Yaku stalked off muttering about âhopeless rookies.â
Lev turned to you, green eyes wide and clueless. âHeâs mad again.â
You couldnât hold it anymoreâyou burst out laughing. âLev, heâs always mad at you.â
âYeah,â Lev said thoughtfully, âI think that means weâre friends now.â
You shook your head, still smiling. âSure, if thatâs what friendship means.â
Lev brightened immediately, like that was the best news heâd heard all day. Then, without warning, he leaned down and said, âHey, you laughed! You usually hide your smile.â
You blinked. âI do not.â
âYou do too,â he said with zero hesitation. âYou always cover your mouth likeââ
He mimicked you with both hands in front of his face, voice muffled. âLike this!â
You smacked his arm playfully. âI donât!â
He grinned, rubbing the spot dramatically. âOw! So mean! You hit me because I noticed you smiling?â
You rolled your eyes. âNo, I hit you because youâre being dumb.â
âThen Iâll be dumb forever!â he declared proudly.
You groaned. âLevââ
âWhat?â he said innocently. âIf me being dumb makes you laugh, then thatâs my job, right?â
You stopped, caught off guard. âThatâsâŠactually kind of sweet.â
He blinked, surprised. âIt is?â
âYeah,â you said softly. âYouâre not as dumb as you think.â
Lev straightened up, crossing his arms proudly. âSee? I knew being me would work out someday.â
You giggled again, shaking your head. âYouâre ridiculous.â
He tilted his head. âBut you like spikes.â
You opened your mouth to protestâthen realized he was watching you expectantly, eyes sparkling, grin wide.
There was no winning against that face.
ââŠMaybe a little,â you admitted.
Lev gasped dramatically. âHa! I knew it!â
He pointed a finger at you like heâd just won a tournament. âYou said it! You like watching me play!â
âLev!â you spluttered, face heating. âThatâs not what Iââ
He was already spinning around in triumph. âYaku-san! She said she likes my spikes!â
Yakuâs voice came from across the court. âI donât care!â
Lev ignored him completely, still beaming at you like youâd handed him a gold medal.
You sighed, covering your face. âYouâre unbelievable.â
He bent down again, still grinning. âBut youâre smiling, so Iâm winning.â
And honestlyâyou couldnât even argue with that.
âŻKageyama Tobio*â .â â§
The gym smelled like chalk dust and oranges.
Practice had ended an hour ago, and most of the team had already gone home.
You were still there, sitting on the edge of the court with your bag open beside you, watching Kageyama serve ball after ball.
He didnât talk much while he practiced. Just that sharp exhale and the thud of the volleyball hitting the floor.
But when he finally stopped and walked over, sweat still dripping from his jawline, he looked at you like heâd known you were there the whole time.
âDid you eat?â he asked, voice rough.
You laughed softly. âYou always ask that.â
âBecause you forget,â he said. Then, after a beat, âI brought something.â
From his bag, he pulled out a small bento boxârice, an egg, and a slice of orange on top. It wasnât fancy, just clumsy and honest, like him.
You blinked. âYou made this?â
He rubbed the back of his neck, cheeks turning bright red. âKinda. My sister helped.â
Then, almost too fast to catch, âShe said you should eat after waiting for me.â
Your heart squeezed. You took the box and sat on the floor again, eating in quiet bites while he drank from his bottle.
He kept glancing overânot staring, just those small, quick looks he thought you wouldnât notice.
After a few minutes, you sighed. âYou donât have to feed me, you know. Iâm alreadyââ
You stopped yourself, words tumbling in your throat.
Kageyama looked up, frowning a little. âAlready what?â
âJustâŠâ You laughed weakly. âBigger. People talk.â
He was silent for a moment. The sound of the ball rolling across the gym echoed before he finally spoke.
âSo?â he said simply.
You blinked. âSoâŠ?â
He stood, walked over, and crouched in front of you. His eyes were serious in that way that made people nervous during gamesâbut it wasnât the same kind of focus now.
He looked at you like he was trying to memorize your face.
âI like you like this,â he said quietly. âYou look...real.Warm.â
The words hit harder than you expected. You didnât know what to say, so you just looked down at the half-empty lunch box, cheeks burning.
Kageyama shifted, awkwardly scratching his head. âI meanââ He stopped, tried again. âYou make me feel calm. When Iâm nervous before games. When I see you, itâs likeââ
He frowned, searching for the right word. âLike everything evens out.â
You smiled, eyes stinging a little. âThatâsâŠreally sweet, Tobio.â
He blushed immediately, turning away. âDonât make it weird.â
You giggled, setting the lunch box aside and standing up. âOkay, okay. But for the record, that was the nicest thing youâve ever said.â
âWhatever,â he muttered, but the corners of his mouth twitched.
You reached out, brushing your fingers against his. He froze, then squeezed your hand back onceâquick, clumsy, but sure.
Outside, the sky had turned orange and pink.
You packed up your things, walking side by side toward the doors. Kageyama carried your bag without being asked.
When you thanked him, he just said, âItâs heavy,â as if that explained everything.
It honestly did.
âŻKenma Kozume*â .â â§
The school was almost empty after practice.
The echo of volleyballs had faded, the last of the team had already left, and the sunset painted the gym windows a soft gold.
Kenma sat on the floor near the wall, phone in his hands, half-focused on his game. His headphones hung around his neck, music leaking faintly. Next to him sat youâlegs crossed, munching on the snacks heâd brought without being asked.
Youâd tried to tell him you werenât hungry, but heâd just handed you the bag and said, âYouâll get cranky later.â
It was annoyingly accurate.
You watched him nowâhis brow furrowed, eyes flicking between screens, strands of blond hair catching the light.
Sometimes you wondered if he forgot you were even there.
But then, without looking up, he said, âYou stopped eating.â
You blinked. âHuh?â
He pointed lazily at the half-open snack bag in your lap. âYou do that when youâre overthinking. You donât have to.â
You felt your face warm. He didnât say things like that oftenâdidnât need toâbut when he did, they went straight through you.
Still, you shrugged, trying to play it off. âJust thinking. I probably shouldnât be eating so much anywayâŠâ
Kenma paused his game. Actually paused it. That was serious.
He turned his head, eyes meeting yoursâcalm, unreadable, but just a little softer around the edges.
âWhy?â
You fiddled with the wrapper. âI dunno. Iâve been feeling⊠kind of heavy lately.â You laughed weakly. âNot just, like, physically. Just⊠you know.â
He didnât answer right away. Instead, he reached over, plucked a snack from the bag, and popped it into his mouth. âThen feel heavy,â he said simply.
You blinked again. âWhat?â
He swallowed, looking slightly embarrassed but continuing anyway. âYouâre⊠warm. Comfortable. Like a blanket. If you werenât here, things would feel⊠weird. Cold, maybe.â
His words came out halting, like he was choosing each one carefully, eyes looking at anything other than you.
You stared at him. âKenmaâŠâ
He shifted, looking away, ears pink. âSo, yeah. Youâre fine. Donât think about it too much.â
Your chest achedâin that good, fizzy way. You leaned against him, resting your head on his shoulder. He stiffened for a second, then relaxed, his game still paused in his hands.
âThanks,â you murmured. âYou always know what to say.â
âI really donât,â he muttered. âYou just⊠listen anyway.â
You smiled, closing your eyes. His shoulder was warm, his voice quiet, and the faint sound of rain starting outside made everything feel softer.
After a while, he spoke again, voice barely above a whisper. âYou can finish those snacks, by the way. I brought âem for you.â
You laughed. âYouâre too sweet sometimes.â
He snorted. âNo, Iâm not. You just think I am.â
But when you looked up, his lips were tilted in the smallest smileâthe real kind, the rare kind he didnât show many people.
And in that momentâsitting on a gym floor, sharing snacks, your head on his shoulderâthe world felt perfectly quiet.
Kenma went back to his game eventually, but his free hand found yours without looking.
His thumb brushed your knuckles absentmindedly, steady and sure, as the sun disappeared behind the school.
For someone who didnât talk much, heâd already said everything.
