I saw the bogleech palworld review and it immediately lost me when I saw how badly Hoodle got botched and I had to make this post defending its honor. These are the three pokemon Hoodle gets compared to and the actual design of hoodle.

Let's talk about the comparisons, First of all this thing has basically very little sableye like... at all? Sure they're both darkly colored but Hoodle is a very dark blue not a more lighter purple. The ONLY similarity is the eye's of the hoodie not having pupils which is a super common design trope and I guess there's some red where Sableye's gem is? I guess? There's the sharp teeth as well but a lot of sableye renders do not show the mouth. As well as the fact Hoodle simply does not have any gems at all in the slightest.

Scraggy is even more confusing because they have basically no design details in common? They both... wear a clothing like thing?? It... has a thing on the top of its head??? They have round heads?????? There's some red???? What are you talking about???

The only comparison with any merit is Mimikyu but design wise they take the design in a completely different direction. Mimikyu very specifically is supposed to be a messed up Pikachu. The design does have some similarities of haunted doll kinds of aesthetics and a similiar head with floppy ears because its just fabric without anything to overly support it and a tail sticking up and out. There are definitely superficial similarities between the two and I will fully admit that Mimikyu was probably an inspiration.

However, the differences between the two are vast.

The color schemes only share one thing in color which is the color black and two completely different shades of yellow, one of which used sparingly on Hoodle.

Tail is a completely different pattern due to not being a lightning bolt.

Completely different patterns with Hoodle's being a much more detailed but more generic creature.

Eyes are actually on the head part of Hoodle's costume unlike Mimikyu which is fully in the bottom part of its costume

You can actually somewhat see inside of Hoodle's costume to see the dark abyss and the glowing green eyes unlike Mimikyu which only had basically two black lines to serve as eyes on top of the costume.

Hoodle has a lot more, for lack of a better term, greebling. It has spikes, the fake eyes are two colored, it has a blood drip pattern, it has teeth, the tail is splattered and spiky, it has lots of pink and purple accenting, it has arms with shoulder pads.

Speaking of the arms there is some similarities in the fact its three clawed and Mimikyu's well known for Shadow Claw, but that's not a key part of Mimikyu's design, as they only pull out these shadow claw arm adjacent when its like, attacking. If you never saw the anime or used one you may never even notice it has them. Even if you do consider it suspiciously similar, the arm placements are completely different as Hoodle uses the arms of the hoodie while Mimikyu has to thread them out the bottom of the costume.

The lore has basically nothing in common, Hoodle talks about not sleeping because to not sleep is to not exist while Mimikyu is some horrible eldritch creature full of envy. While not super important design wise I think it's important to point out that they are very different attitudes and personality.

If we look at Hoodle more in motion vs Mimikyu, it's entire posture and a lot of similarities fall away, the tail lies flat, it uses its arms as actual arms, it's actually a bit large, It doesn't slouch at all like Mimikyu's attempts to keep balance. It has a completely different sort of deflation to Mimikyu when it's sleeping. The body language and shape language of these two creatures are extremely different. Hoodle reminds me more of a bugsnax grumpus honestly with the goofy sharp but broad teeth and the dopey big eyed head empty look on the hoodie.

While Hoodle almost certainly has some Mimikyu inspiration, they took haunted plush doll/hoodie in a completely different and unique direction. The similarities are there, but they're superficial as fuck. Bogleech gave it a 2/5 for originality, and that's really underselling all the work that goes into Hoodle's design. It took a simple concept of "haunted fabric/plush/clothing" that is featured for a popular pokemon, and took it in a super new and unique direction.

I am however going to be confused on why scraggy got pulled into this comparison. Scraggy doesn't even have sharp teeth! Hoodle doesn't wear pants or need to keep fixing it's outfit!
