One Line Hook

When you send out queries (and trying to sell your book in general), you need to have a hook-line. Basically, a one-sentence summary of your story that’s intended to entice an agent, editor, or reader to pick up your book. It’s a sales pitch.

Bonus: 

Whenever someone asks you “what’s your book about?” you’ll have something to reply with other than “uhhhhhhhhhh....” Not only does it save you from social awkwardness, but you’ll appear more confident and your story will sound better as a result.

What to Include:

Your hook-line doesn’t have to include all of these things, but aim for a few of them at least.

Character: Who is your hero and what do they want?

Conflict: What’s keeping your hero from their goal?

Uniqueness: What makes your novel stand out?

Setting: What is your novel’s setting and/or genre?

Typically, you also want to mention the inciting incident--it’s an easy way to lead into the plot. Starting your sentence with words like “When” or “After” jumps straight to the exciting part of your story.

My Advice: 

Accept that you won’t get it perfect the first time. Or the second time. Or the third, fourth, or fifth. Just open up a blank word document and write down EVERY possibility. Even if the second you write it, you think “wow that’s awful,” don’t delete it. Just write a new one underneath it. Sometimes you’ll end up reusing bits and pieces of the previous attempts, so it helps to have it all there.

It can be really hard to narrow your book into one tight sentence. But seriously, it’s worth your time.
