 “  are  you  a  fan  of  the  opera  ,  miss  zhao  ?  ”  benedict  offered  her  arm  to  the  younger  miss  .  his  tone  was  light  and  polite  ,  however  there  was  a  quiet  curiosity  beneath  it  .  his  gaze  lingered  on  her  just  long  enough  to  make  the  inquiry  feel  less  like  courtesy  and  more  like  genuine  interest  ,  small  smile  growing  .  “  i  must  admit  ,  it  has  been  some  time  since  i  last  attended  .  "  he  was  not  fond  of  the  opera  but  he  thought  he  might  induldge  if  only  for  the  sake  of  appearances  .  “  in  a  corner  somewhere  our  siblings  are  probably  applauding  in  glee  .  ”  a  soft  exhale  of  amusement  followed  ,  feigning  iritation  at  the  thought  but  not  entirely  true  .  “  i  suspect  they  will  take  full  credit  for  this  outing  ,  but  let  us  not  let  their  scheming  enjoy  our  fun  .  what  do  you  say  ,  miss  zhao  ?  ”

benedict  was  a  people-pleaser  to  a  fault  .  he  thrived  on  the  validation  of  those  around  him  —  most  especially  his  family  .  so  when  he  was  told  to  do  something  ,  despite  the  grumbles  and  quiet  pushback  ,  he  would  do  it  with  gritted  teeth  …  and  do  it  exceptionally  well  .  speaking  to  eligible  ladies  ,  say  for  example  ,  was  one  of  them  .  only  heaven  knowns  what  possessed  bernard  to  push  him  to  the  second  miss  zhao  —  not  that  she  wasn't  attractive  but  deep  down  benedict  knew  it  would  come  to  nothing  .  his  mind  and  heart  (  still  )  possibly  elsewhere  .  nevertheless  ,  it  seemed  worth  the  effort  .  at  least  they  cannot  fault  him  for  not  even  attempting  to  try  .  “  miss  xinyi  ,  ”  donning  a  charming  smile  .  “  i  trust  you  are  finding  the  garden  party  agreeable?  i  apologize  i  am  yet  to  call  on  you  but  i  look  forward  to  the  opera  .  "

 despite the sun shining above mayfair , the slight chill in the air was hard to ignore . and despite seoyeon’s better judgment , she chose to promenade today , thinking it might help with the homesickness — only to find it did quite the opposite . " london is quite beautiful , of course … yet i cannot help thinking it feels rather different when one has no familiar faces within it , " small yet tight smile on her face as she turned to the other .
