he had not intended to stop. the evening had seemed agreeable enough for a slow circuit of the street, which was the sort of exercise his leg tolerated without complaint, and the reeve of covenhall's residence had simply presented itself as a convenient place to pause and take the weight off for a moment. he had been standing at the iron railing when the door opened. the woman had not seen him, which was apparent from the way she nearly left her own skin upon discovering him. he waited for the fright to pass before he spoke, which seemed the least he could do. "long enough," he said, which was honest if not particularly reassuring. his eye was not at its best this evening and he was aware that he did not cut an entirely unthreatening figure in the dark, battered as he currently was. "i was not attempting to lurk. i should say that plainly." he glanced at the door she had come from, then back at her, and arrived at the obvious conclusion without commenting on it. a young woman, alone, on a street she had just admitted she should not be on. he had no interest in making it worse for her. "you are quite safe," he added. "and i did not see you. as far as i am concerned."

"  i  appreciate  the  reassurance  .  i  did  not  think  you  were  a  lurker  ,  colonel  ,  nor  do  you  seem  to  be  the  type  to  lurk  —  unless  i  am  mistaken  ,  "  seoyeon  cleared  her  throat  .  truth  be  told  ,  she  was  more  terrified  of  someone  seeing  her  outside  unchaperoned  than  the  man  in  front  of  her  .  femme  held  her  head  high  and  yet  her  hands  were  clutched  together  nervously  .  it  wasn't  the  dark  or  the  fact  that  seoyeon  still  did  not  know  her  way  around  london  she  was  scared  ,  she  was  more  terrified  of  the  perception  and  judgement  if  she  were  to  be  found  out  .  still  ,  despite  the  baron  covenhall's  home  being  lovely  ,  at  times  it  felt  ...  suffocating  . "  i  ...  i  like  to  walk  .  "  she  blurted  out  ,  looking  at  her  hands  .  "  but  only  when  the  streets  are  quiet  ,  "  she  continued  .  “  it  allows  for  a  certain  …  clarity  of  mind  .  ” her  gaze  flickered  toward  the  dim  stretch  of  road  ahead  before  returning  to  him  ,  throat  cleared  —  something  she  often  did  when  we  was  nervous  .  "  though  i  am  aware  that  is  not  a  habit  often  encouraged.  "  a  faint  ,  wry  tone  crept  into  her  voice  .  "  are  you  off  somewhere  ,  colonel  ?  i  do  not  wish  to  keep  you  .  "

"i  am  not  offended,"  arthur  says  in  his  personal  defence,  his  mouth  curving  into  a  downward  parabola.  "i  am  puzzled  by  it."  he  could  not  recall  the  sea  being  such  a  recurring  theme  in  the  story.  the  frown  is  not  as  permanent  as  being  committed  to  canvas.  “i  shall  take  any  gift  from  the  gods  today.”  he  grins  at  the  young  lady,  unabashed,  "yourself  included,  miss  jang."

"of  course,"  he  answers  quickly.  perhaps  too  quickly.  oh,  arthur  had  never  been  a  good  study  of  anything.  he  rarely  did  his  readings  as  a  boy,  finding  them  dreadfully  boring.  the  only  myths  that  captured  his  attention  were  those  read  aloud  and  even  then  barely.  "dead  brother,  burials."  it  should  not  be  a  surprise  he's  gotten  ariadne  and  antigone  tangled.  "i  do  not  understand."

initially  ,  seoyeon  ignored  arthur  ,  thinking  maybe  if  she  did  not  respond  he  would  leave  her  alone  but  what  he  had  said  next  made  her  head  turn  —  and  not  in  a  good  way  .  "  forgive  me  but  dead  brother  and  burials  ?  "  blinking  as  she  echoed  back  arthur's  words  .  raven-haired  female  fell  silent  ,  stunned  and  confused  .  she  mentally  retraced  what  she  had  said  moments  earlier  ,  making  sure  she  was  not  the  one  who  had  misspoken  .  "  sir  ,  surely  you  are  mocking  me  .  i  do  not  take  jokes  lightly  ,  "  eye  brows  raised  .  femme's  tone  shifted  into  that  of  a  softer  one  ,  simmering  exasperation  kept  at  bay  .  "  arthur  ,  "  she  exhaled  .  "  that  is  antigone  ...  i  was  talking  about  ariadne  .  labryinth  ,  minotaur  ,  marries  a  hero  that  deserts  her  on  an  island  ?  —  perhaps  you  are  in  need  of  a  refresher  on  the  classics  .  "

"Hm—oh...!" As her gaze lifted, Beren tried not to show her surprise nor how her cheeks reddened. There was a boldness in others that she has, silently, admired. Certainly, it was a trait that she herself could never obtain; it was quite impossible to imagine so. And yet, that did not stop her from being in awe. Though, from the other's tone, it was quite apparent that those within their higher society (albeit, a society that was still quite new for her) did not exactly behave in such a manner. Taking a careful sip of her own tea, the mother of Baron Covenhall tried to consider her next words carefully. She didn't wish to say something out of turn. "It appears that perhaps just might be the case. It is my understanding that to be noticed during the season helps to higher their prospects—or, in opposite, lowers them. Is it a possibility that she aims for the latter?"

sarinya  tilted  her  head  slightly  ,  studying  beren  with  quiet  curiosity  rather  than  judgement  .  "  a  possibility  ,  yes  ,  "  sarinya  replied  smoothly,  her  tone  light  ,  finger  still  hooked  around  the  handle  of  her  teacup  .  "  you  are  quite  right  in  principle  that  being  noticed  does  alter  one’s  standing  but  let  me  let  you  in  on  a  secret  ,  "  lady  howardson  paused  briefly  ,  just  long  enough  to  let  her  words  settle  .  "  impressions  ,  perception  —  that  is  all  key  .  once  that  perception  is  formed  ,  it  is  remarkably  difficult  to  undo  .  and  unfortunately,  society  is  rather  unforgiving  when  one  chooses  to …  announce  oneself  too  boldly  before  one  has  earned  the  right  to  be  remembered  .  “  finally  ,  she  set  her  teacup  on  it's  saucer  with  careful  precision  ,  letting  her  words  linger  as  she  pretended  to  be  interested  with  her  tea  .  “  but  enough  of  the  etiquette  lesson  ,  ”  waving  the  previous  conversation  off  .  ”  i  am  sure  a  woman  of  your  standing  is  well  aware  of  them  .  tell  me  ,  how  are  you  fairing  in  london  ?  mayfair  has  been  most  kind  to  your  family  ,  i  hope  ?  "

wendy stifled a laugh at sarinya's dramatic sigh  —  for it was utterly comical for them to even attempt to pretend that nothing was amiss ! the baroness slowly continued her deliberate movements in her flower arrangement, busying her hands in order to allow her thoughts to run wild. finally, her blue gaze lifted from her task to fix upon her friend.

" it is a wonder that we haven't spoken about it, truthfully. " she truly laughed then, shaking her heard. " i believe both the prince of wales and prince darius had spilt some blood. it was not a pretty sight. " thankfully, wendy had been close enough to see exact expressions etched in both princes' faces — her shock was immense and sudden, it was intensely unexpected that both princes had lost their composure quite so dramatically. " her majesty must be apoplectic. i would not know if my composure could handle being thus embarrassed if my boys were caught behaving in such a way." with pursed lips, the baroness fully turned to face sarinya. " what could it possibly be about? i wish we could whittle out the truth somehow from either of the princes but that would be thoroughly inappropriate... "

"  oh  ,  entirely  ,  "  sarinya  exhaled  in  agreement  as  if  the  silence  had  burdened  far  too  much  .  a  soft  laugh  slipped  past  roughed  lips  as  she  leaned  back  more  comfortably  in  her  seat  .  "  i  was  beginning  to  worry  decorum  has  dictated  us  far  too  much  ,  and  have  quite  forgotten  our  true  nature  as  gossips  .  "  the  lady  howardson  thanked  the  heavens  that she  is finally  setting  her  book  to  the  side  ,  in  exchange  for  a  much  more  stimulating  past  time  . "  apoplectic  is  probably  the  most  charitable  word  for  majesty's  disposition  .  i  wish  i  could  share  the  same  sentiment  though  .  alexander  is  tragically  his  mother's  son  and  i  should  be  more  shocked  if  he  did  not  possess  a  certain  …  chaos  in  him  .  "  she  paused  briefly  ,  finger  resting  on  her  top  lip  in  thought  ,  trying  to  recount  the  events  of  the  garden  party  in  the  hopes  to  catch  something  she  had  not  noticed  before  .  her  eyes  flicked  back  to  wendy  ,  sharpening  just  slightly  with  curiosity  now.  "  shall  we  ask  ,  carrie  ?  it  must  have  been  quite  something  to  drive  both  princes  to  abandon  all  sense  of  decorum  —  and  in  such  a  setting  ,  no  less  .  don't  get  me  started  on  carrie's  little  incident  .  i've  been  told  the  servants  are  still  finding  pieces  of  porcelain  and  china  at  hampton  court  gardens  .  "

xinyi's  gaze  flicked  to  the  lady  sarinya  spoke  of,  hiding  a  frown  behind  a  sip  of  tea.  "i  think  it  looks  gorgeous."  for  how  long  she  heard  whispers  of  her  family  behind  her  back,  she  had  little  interest  in  punching  down  what  was  ultimately  inoffensive.

"i  hardly  see  how  a  brawl  between  princes  equates  to  one's  choice  of  attire.  one  is  confidence  in  oneself;  the  other  is  embarrassment  of  station."  and  it  was  clear  which  was  which,  given  the  lack  of  prince  sightings  recently.

taking  another  sip,  xinyi  courteously  smiled.  "though  we  can  agree  on  long  remaining  interesting.  what  else  has  caught  your  eye?"

"  my  dear  miss  xinyi  ,  "  sarinya  began  sweetly  ,  her  tone  dipped  in  honey  and  something  altogether  sharper  beneath  .  the  smile  on  her  growing  on  her  lips  was  that  of  an  amused  one  .  "  how  truly  gracious  of  you  .  i  do  so  admire  how  firmly  you  hold  to  principle  .  your  opinion  is  quite  ...  refreshing  .  it  is  always  so  interesting  to  hear  the  thoughts  of  those  still  becoming  acquainted  with  the  finer  distinctions  of  society  .  "  lady  howardson  paused  ,  just  long  enough  to  set  her  teacup  down  with  careful  precision  . ❝ sarinya ... stay a moment. ❞ evening had descended upon carlton house and after a light meal with her ladies, caroline had arranged for them to return to their homes, chartering carriages to escort them safely into the care of their families and friends. she waited for the rest of them to depart before she called out for the lady howardson, gesturing silently for one of her oldest friends to follow her from the receiving hall to her private chambers. ❝ i need help getting ready for bed. do you mind ? ❞ it was not something that caroline often requested from her ladies ─ she enjoyed a measure of independence still and the maids were careful enough in their assistance, so it was clear that there was more that she needed, yet struggled to give word. ❝ ... it has been a while since we have seen the baronet. ❞ she began quietly as she pulled the pins from her hair slowly. ❝ i will not insult you by asking if you miss him but do you miss ... having a man around ? ❞ caroline glanced at sarinya as she spoke, cheeks slightly pink. ❝ in ... in bed, i mean. and among other things, of course, but primarily ... that is to say ... how ... has it been long ? since you've ... ❞ she trailed off, brow furrowed.

all  decorum  was  left  by  the  door  of  caroline's  chambers  ,  mask  and  walls  surrendered  the  moment  the  heavy  doors  closed  behind  them  .  sarinya  settled  behind  caroline  ,  unfastening  the  jewelry  that  hung  on  her  neck  ,  each  clasp  released  with  practiced  precision  rather  than  haste  .  she  glanced  at  the  princess  through  the  mirror  ,  brows  perked  up  . the  bruise  upon  cheek  still  smarts;  the  cut  on  lip  still  tender.  and  yet,  DARIUS  HANOVER  sits  as  if  unbothered  by  the  obvious  signs  of  consequences  painted  on  his  face.  within  white's  gentleman  club,  perhaps  there  are  more  who  care  little  as  to  what  happened.  though  the  prince  doubts  that  BENEDICT  ALDERIDGE  is  one  of  them. // @a1taers

the argument with charles still rang in his ears. sitting across from caroline's twin only intensified darius' shame, for it was her reputation that suffered the worst despite his intention. the outsider married in, the one the queen would blame.

darius ran tongue over teeth, sensing the sting from the cut. a relentless reminder of the disaster he contributed to. "i was hoping to discuss more academic matters with you today," he finally said. "but i suspect it's not at the forefront of your mind. am i wrong?"

"  music  to  my  ears  ,  "  benedict  clapped  his  hands  in  relief  more  than  delight  .  "  finally  something  worth  discussing  .  i  fear  the  ton  has  been  rather  taken  with  lady  whistledown's  retelling  of  the  garden  party  .  "  and  quite  frankly  ,  benedict  has  grown  tired  of  it  .  how  can  someone  anonymous  and  —  he  cut  himself  off  with  a  small  shake  of  his  head  ,  as  though  the  very  direction  of  the  thought  annoyed  him  .  "  i  could  say  the  same  to  you  ,  your  highness  ,  "  he  leaned  back  on  his  plush  seat  .  "  that  cut  looks  ...  like  it's  healing  quite  well  .  "

the moment she read whistledown she could not shake the irritation she was feeling in her chest. no amount of tea, pastries or sharp exhales could help relieve it. her sit down with lady church concludes, she says her goodbyes and she rushes out the door. and within a few steps away from the cafe, the youngest lord alderidge appears. she tries her best to soften her expression with a smile. " lord alderidge. " she greets. " i hope the day has been treating you well. "

"  lady  cavendish  ,  "  benedict  briefly  bowed  his  head  to  greet  the  other  .  "  my  day  is  far  better  now  that  i  have  run  into  you  ,  "  he  said  ,  his  tone  polite  and  composed  .  youngest  alderidge  stepped  to  the  side  to  avoid  blocking  the  sidewalk,  yet  still  maintained  a  respectful  distance  ,  his  posture  easy  but  attentive  as  he  addressed  her  properly  .  "  are  you  off  somewhere  ,  my  lady  ?  i  was  just  heading  to  st.  james  park  .  might  I  have  the  pleasure  of  your  company,  if  you  are  not  otherwise  engaged  ?  ”

lord  benedict  alderidge  to  see  you,  milady,  their  footman  said.  and  in  turn,  brown  eyes  had  gone  wide  in  surprise.  alone  in  the  drawing  room,  she  was  fortunate  she  need  not  explain  his  appearance  to  safiye  and  emine  for  sevda  was  sure  she  would  need  to  expect  a  line  of  questioning  to  rival  a  firing  squad.  she  steps  away  from  her  easel  with  some  hesitation,  caught  between  allowing  him  to  wait  as  they  stashed  away  her  painting  and  simply  ...  existing  with  a  hobby.  she  supposes  it's  not  terrible  gauche  to  be  seen  painting,  and  perhaps  better  than  simply  sitting.

"it  is  a  rather  pleasant  surprise,  lord  benedict,"  sevda  answers  in  turn,  a  small  smile  on  her  lips  as  she  wipes  her  palms  against  the  front  of  her  apron.  a  smear  of  cobalt  paint  stains  the  thick  canvas.  it  was  so  strange  to  see  him  in  their  drawing  room  —  the  familiar,  comfortable  durmaz  hues  engulfing  a  new  figure.  "i  am  pleased  that  you  think  me  to  be  worth  your  time."  and  even  more  pleased  to  know  that  he  had  been  honest  with  his  intention.  she  had  hoped  that  he  would  call,  as  he  said  he  would,  but  sevda  had  learned  that  she  should  not  allow  her  hopes  to  climb  to  any  sort  of  heights  lest  she  grow  disappointed.  especially  considering  the  number  of  women  in  his  acquantaince  that  whistledown  had  listed.  herself  included.  again.  benedict  was  growing  higher  in  her  respects.  she  was  unsure  where  she  fell  within  his.  "before  i  agree  to  accompany  you,  tell  me  know  if  the  weather  requires  me  to  fetch  a  pelisse?"

"  surprised  ?  "  his  brow  perked  up  with  a  teasing  smile  .  "  i  do  not  make  promises  lightly  ,  nor  do  i  forget  them  easily  .  "  his  gaze  lingered  on  her  a  moment  longer  than  propriety  might  strictly  require  ,  as  though  taking  quiet  satisfaction  in  having  proven  as  much  .  thank  goodness  they  were  in  the  comforts  of  the  durmaz's  home  else  he  would  have  found  himsef  on  whistledown's  papers  once  again  . "  i  hope  i  did  not  interupt  anything  ,  "  his  gaze  fell,  unashamedly  this  time,  to  the  streak  of  cobalt  upon  her  apron,  and  his  smile  deepening  .  "  i  rather  like  that  im  learning  something  new  about  you  with  every  encounter  .  first  you  are  excellent  at  card  games  and  now  i  am  discovering  you  are  also  an  artist  .  i  begin  to  wonder  what  other  talents  you  have  been  withholding  .  "  and  then  a  beat  ,  his  gaze  holding  hers  ,  steady  and  unflinching,  as  though  he  had  no  intention  of  pretending  he  was  merely  being  polite  about  it  .  clearing  his  throat  ,  he  continued  ,  "  a  pelisse  would  be  wise  though  i  do  recall  you  once  insisting  upon  my  services  as  your  …  what  was  it  ?  a  ‘mighty  shield  ,  ’  if  memory  serves.”

emilio does not miss the brevity of it. he says nothing for a moment, turning it over quietly. brief. too busy with the kites. "she did not mention it," he says, eventually. not an accusation. just a thing that is true, offered without particular weight. he looks back out across the garden. "amélia is not always forthcoming about such things." he is quiet for a moment longer than the conversation strictly requires. "i owe you something of an apology," he says, unhurried, as though he had been deciding whether to say it and has only just landed on yes. "for the timing of our departure, among other things. and for the manner in which i made my opinions known, some years ago, regarding your interest in my sister." he does not elaborate. they both know what he means. "i was not always reasonable on the subject." he looks out across the garden. "i do not know what your circumstances are presently. and i am not asking." genuinely. "but if there is any part of what existed before that you have not entirely closed the door on, i would ask only that you not hold her brother's poor behaviour against her. she had no part in any of it."

truthfully  ,  benedict  did  not  know  what  to  say  .  emilio's  apology,  offered  so  plainly,  was  not  something  the  alderidge  had  anticipated  nor  expected  from  him  .  for  a  moment,  his  gaze  remained  fixed  somewhere  beyond  the  garden  path  ,  as  though  the  years  emilio  spoke  of  had  briefly  returned  to  stand  beside  them  .  "  you  are  her  brother  .  i  did  not  expect  reason  .  "  finally  finding  the  words  albeit  quiet  and  measured  .  benedict  exhaled  softly,  the  faintest  hint  of  a  smile  ghosting  across  his  lips,  though  it  did  not  quite  reach  his  eyes  .  “  i  never  did  ,  ”  he  continued  with  a  small  shrug  .  if  anything  ,  benedict  himself  had  a  sister  —  well  ,  now  ,  sisters  —  whom  he  would  do  anything  for  so  he,  of  all  people  ,  understood  . amelia  and  benedict's  current  standing  was  as  murky  as  the  river  thames  ,  shifting  with  each  passing  moment  and  offering  no  clear  depth  to  measure  .  what  had  once  felt  certain  now  lingered  in  an  uneasy  in-between  —  neither  fully  lost  nor  comfortably  within  reach  .  it  was  a  precarious  situation  that  benedict  wished  he  could  confidently  say  he  knew  to  navigate  but  in  truth  did  not  .  "  you  must  know  ,  i  have  never  held  her  accountable  for  your  decisions  nor  will  i  begin  now  .but  it  would  be  disingenuous  to  say  it  did  not  alter  the  course  of  things  .  "  he  added  ,  glancing  briefly  toward  him  and  then  to  the  kites  that  soared  above  them  ,  hoping  they  might  offer  some  distraction  from  this  conversation  .

it  wasn't  surprise  at  the  section  about  benedict;  truly,  she  expected  she  would  only  be  one  of  many,  especially  when  she  was  a  choice  presented  by  their  siblings  than  of  benedict's  own  volition.  no,  it  was  dreadful  doom  that  slithered  through  her  veins.  the  debt  was  her  responsibility,  and  the  longer  she  didn't  secure  a  match,  the  worse  her  family  would  be.  and  if  lord  benedict  only  stayed  for  mere  obligation  to  his  sibling  ---
