Aaron Krupp: Giving Haitians Hope by Giving Them a Voice
The modern American attitude is defined by a sense of individualism. Simply work hard and act responsibly, and success will follow; we are the ones in command of our lives. The idea that there are factors out of our control never enters the equation. But in impoverished communities, people’s fates are decided by essentials we take for granted every day — a lack of clean water, food, or electricity.
This inconvenient truth is what motivates Aaron Krupp, a junior at Oberlin College. Krupp has worked with the Haitian Organization Program for Education and Health (HOPEH), a group dedicated to providing easily accessible education and medical care to rural communities in Haiti.
Aaron spent time with HOPEH after the devastating earthquake that ravaged the country in January 2010. He noticed a disconnect between the specific needs of Haitians and the services being provided by non-profits. So he resolved to give Haitians mired in poverty a voice, conducting an extensive survey to gain an understanding of what initiatives were making a difference.

Hopeh Incident
The Hopeh Incident refers to a UFO that was supposedly spotted and photographed over Hebei, China in 1942.
Masujiro Kiru had found the photograph while looking through his father’s photo album during World War II. His father had purchased the photograph from a Tianjin street photographer. Some sources claim that the photographer was later identified to be an American man on duty in that region, who thought the object in question was a hat. Other skeptics identify the object as a bird or a streetlight.
