(He’s totally adorable in his little coat and hat and mittens, and his eyes light up when Finn packs a snowball and hands it to him. It’s pretty much the cutest thing ever.)
Ava’s still too young to go out in the snow (at least according to Rachel), and to be fair, she is only four months old, so Rachel makes lunch while Finn and Chris play. Finn tries to teach Chris how to make a snowman, but Finn ends up doing all the work while Chris runs around and throws snow up in the air. (It’s adorable though, so Finn’s definitely not complaining).
After a while, Chris says he’s tired, and his cheeks and nose are all red, so Finn takes him inside. He has to untangle him from the various layers Rachel put him in, but Chris is a good sport, standing still until Finn finally gets all the extra articles of clothing off.
“Go see if Mama’s done with lunch,” he tells his son, and Chris smiles before scampering off to the kitchen.
Finn takes off his own wet clothes, taking them to the laundry room to dry before joining the rest of his family in the kitchen. Rachel already has a bowl of soup and a grilled cheese sandwich waiting on him, and Chris has some soup dribbling down his chin.
Rachel smiles when he walks in, says, “Hey, honey, I made you lunch” before turning back to Ava in her high chair, spooning her some baby food.
Finn smiles. “Thanks, babe,” he says, leaning down to kiss her cheek. “And thanks to you, too, munchkin,” he adds, kissing the top of Ava’s head. She makes a gurgling noise, and Finn takes that to mean that she approves.
After lunch, Chris declares that they need to make a fort, and sometimes Finn’s amazed at how demanding he is for a three year old. Then he remembers that he is half Rachel, so it’s probably to be expected.
“I don’t know, Chris,” Rachel begins, “the tree’s kind of taking up most of the living room…”
But Chris pushes out his bottom lip, says, “Please, Mama, please?” and Finn knows Rachel’s going to cave.
“Oh, I guess if we move the couch it’ll be alright,” Rachel concedes.
So Finn moves the couch while Rachel gets out the pillows and blankets they keep in the closet, and Chris tries to start dragging the kitchen chairs into the living room. Finn goes to help him, and then finally, they have everything assembled.
“Here, Daddy,” Chris says, picking up the end of one blanket and handing it to Finn, “get started.”
Rachel laughs from the couch where she’s sitting with Ava balanced on her lap, and Finn sticks his tongue out at her before draping the blanket over a couple of chairs. It doesn’t take long to make an adequate fort (plus Chris is really impatient). It ends up being three blankets draped across five chairs, and Chris claps his hands excitedly as Finn grabs the pillows and puts them inside.
“What do you think, buddy?” he asks, kneeling down so he’s eye-level with his son.
Chris grins. “It’s the best fort ever, Daddy!” He then proceeds to crawl inside.
Finn chuckles, shaking his head before heading over to the couch to sit next to his wife and daughter. He can hear Chris mumbling something to himself inside the fort, and he can see him moving around. “Won’t be too long before little Ava Bear is that active,” he whispers to Rachel, kissing the side of his wife’s head.
She smiles down at their daughter, who’s looking up at them with big, brown eyes. “Oh, let’s hope she stays little for as long as she can.”
Finn murmurs an agreement.
Chris pokes his head out of the front of the fort. “Daddy, come in with me!”
Finn stretches, standing up. “Can Mama and Ava come too?”
Chris sighs dramatically. “I guess.”
“Well, don’t act too excited,” Rachel huffs, but she smiles.
The four of them eventually get situated in the fort, with Chris on Finn’s lap and Ava on Rachel’s. Finn’s legs are hanging out of the entrance, but he doesn’t really care. When they look up, they can see the lights of the Christmas tree through the blankets, and Finn thinks that this is what Christmas feels like.
He has the greatest family in the world, and sitting with them in a blanket fort in the days before Christmas just reminds him that every day is a gift within itself, as long as he has them beside him.
