" i do feel drawn to you . " she's said it aloud , but the way she says it gives away the fact that he'd made his internal monologue known to her — whether intentionally or not . " sort of like . . . the way the sea is drawn to the shoreline . i want to pull away from you , but every time i come back . because i'm compelled to . " ( because she wants to . )
" isn't that strange ? "
The two vampires sit across from one another, each holding a book in hand while silence fills the small library — Cain's library to be exact. Like every so often, he found himself in Nemesis' company, though he hated her presence at the very beginning he couldn't help but notice how he gradually came to accept her with each day she decided to show up unannounced. While he would never admit it, there was no one he would consider a 'friend'. Being at least three centuries old, he eventually got used to this fact. The only person special to him, the one he remembered, was and always will be Roselyn. Still, ever since spending more time with Nemesis, it seemed that memories from his previous life, his human life, would flood his mind ever so often. Even now — sitting together like this — it felt oddly familiar, he couldn't explain it.
With Roselyn he never sat down like this, even if he did, there'd always be a feeling of unpleasantry. However, this right here felt ... nice. Enjoying quality time with another person — Nemesis out of all people — feeling safe and happy, he rarely felt this way with another person. Could it be 'friendship'? Did he ever have a similar connection like this in the past? Would anyone even want to be his friend? As he pondered, the redhead shifted his glance back and forth between his book and Nemesis. At some point she even caught him staring, which in turn caused him to avert his gaze again.
There was so much he didn't know about himself, so much he still wanted to learn — yet, at the same time, he was scared to find out the truth. Still, deep in his heart he knew. He knew that he was craving the same connection like the one's shared by the characters in the books he read. Trusting someone in reality though... wasn't as easy as fiction made it out to be. Cain glanced up from his book and let his gaze linger on Nemesis. I wonder whether you feel as strangely drawn towards me as I do to you. He strongly longed for an answer to the question that kept bothering him night and day. This craving desire seemed so deep, that his inner thought eventually reached the other vampire telepathically. The redhead let out a sigh before returning his attention back to his book, completely oblivious to the fact that Nemesis heard his rather personal monologue. 'I do feel drawn to you.'
He couldn't even turn the page when she suddenly gave a response. Fingertips gently held the paper mid-turn as his body froze up completely. Dark eyes widened in shock and disbelief, then once the emotions settled down, a wave of embarrassment washed over him. If he still had any blood circulation his cheeks would be flushing red now. Instead, he choked and caughed in surprise, almost ripping the page in the process. He immediately closed the book and put it on a small table next to his armchair to keep it safe, then he cleared his throat and crossed his arms. Did she seriously read his mind just now? That was impossible. There was no way she could have done it without him opening his mind up to her first — oh.
The realization hit him and he sighed, rubbing the sides of his temples. He wasn't known for making careless mistakes. He didn't know himself like this, being so absent-minded and lacking composure. To his surprise, she didn't even make fun of him or mock his train of thought, neither was there any disgust in her voice. No, on the contrary, she gave an honest and genuine answer to his question. On one hand he felt relief, on the other he really wanted to turn into mist and vanish. Cain tried his best to appear relaxed and cool, which was impossible to do with every muscle in his body tensing up, especially his face displayed the sheer awkwardness he felt. That, and his mind was all over the place. Talking about feelings had never been his greatest forte — yet, here he was. How does the saying go again? Be careful what you wish for, it might come true. And it did.
"Yes, it is quite strange." Ahem. "I mean, it's absolutely ridiculous. We — mutually drawn to each other — what nonsense. Or so I'd like to think." He pauses before locking eyes with Nemesis. "Like a flower is drawn to the sun, a moth is drawn to a flame, and the moon affects the sea. Unbelievable, yet possible. There's always a good reason behind what seems strange." He gets up from the armchair, grabbing the book from the small table, and walked over to one of the shelves where he places the book. With his back facing the other, he continues. "The reason why I allow you inside my library is the same reason why you always come back." Three little harmless words but he refuses to speak them out loud. Was he getting shy? Instead, he dares to open his thoughts to her, this time intentionally. I like you.
