upon looking inside the family photo album, the first one you come across is a rather oddly shaped photo of the byers. the boys are younger- will byers, on the right, obviously still a young child while jonathan byers, who was on the left, looked to just be starting to enter his pre-teens. joyce byers has her hands on both of their shoulders as she stood behind them, all three of them happily smiling into the camera. they all stood in the daylight, not far from their front porch while trees littered the background. 

upon closer inspection, you see that the reason it’s oddly shaped is because one side of the photo seemed to be cut off. you wonder why before you see the single arm coming from the left that lie around joyce’s shoulders. there also seemed to be a hand atop joyce’s on jonathan’s shoulder. they looked manly... 

it seems someone cut lonnie byers out of the picture. 

you have a sneaking suspicion that it was jonathan.

Joyce certainly loved Sara like she were her own. It wasn’t hard for the woman to grow attached to the young woman, putting aside the fact that she was Jim’s daughter. Joyce genuinely enjoyed having her around, and she felt as though Sara felt the same way around her. She didn’t have to pay visits to the Byers household, stop in for dinner, but she did. It’s always the little things that make a person feel like they’re a part of the family, and it was natural in the way Joyce simply accepted her in this way.

She had to be excited about something, Joyce thought. The girl had entered through the front door, her own copy of their house key in hand, and called out for . . . well, the woman assumed Sara had been looking for her. Joyce grinned, not entirely sure if she had meant to call her that, but she was clearly very accepting of it.  “ Oh! Sara! Yes, what is it, hon? ”

To be surrounded by family and the people he cares about. At the heart of everything, even his desire to feel needed, is just the fact that he doesn’t want to lose people. Everybody needs to feel connections to other people and he’s no exception. He went a long time thinking he could be an island, but he wasn’t - he was stuck in a dark cave. And now that he’s out of it, the idea of getting sucked back in again terrifies him. He wants to hold his loved ones close and never let go. As long as he has them, he’ll be happy.

headcanon for AU verse: after Hopper gets back from the Upside Down and is reunited with Sara as well

@mindslayed: el would feel. really awkward around sara and might even show affection to both her and hopper less because she’s afraid she’d replace her most siblings would fight for attention but el surrenders it freely and keeps a lengthy distance

me:  it would take him a while to realize that's what she's doing tbh he'd probably think she's just really uncomfortable around her because she's new/unfamiliar/is related to the upside down stuff

mindslayed:  it’s not really any of that lmao. it’s just. she feels like she doesn’t belong anymore because she didn’t want to be a replacement and like i mentioned to sun she’d probably give the bracelet back and run off

mindslayed:  sdfhj she would just leave it yeah it’s not that she doesn’t want to warm up she just feels like she’s. too out of place the problem isn’t sara it’s just her ends up sitting near the quarry and throwing rocks into the water not for the reason you’d think she just likes it there

me:  gosh they'd have to fumble through such a clumsy talk about feelings cuz they both suck at it but like

hoppeir:  honestly yes that's sara's mood with both of them

me:  "no no no there's no black hole, okay? Sara came back. she didn't get sucked into it. it doesn't exist" that'd be a good way to get him to admit there isn't one though these dumbs who have to think they've lost something to realize how much it means to them or what idiots they were being pushing it away

mindslayed:  el would just nod. “you have your family back. no more black hole.” just tosses another rock without even looking at him. “don’t want that to happen again.” in her mind she’s afraid to open up because her insides feel like a black hole. whenever she does bad things happen so she just kinda closes up tighter every time

me:  he just takes her face in his hands "El, listen to me. You are not a black hole. You are the person who showed me there was still light in this world, okay? I didn't think there was any. I didn't even remember what it felt like to be happy. You reminded me of that. You gave that back to me. Do you understand?"

mindslayed:  el just kinda looks at the floor and tries not to cry. “you... missed out, on time. with sara. don’t want to mess it up.”

me:  "That's not your fault. But I want you both... I want both my girls to be happy."

me:  SAME mY NOSE IS RUNNING that'd be the first time he'd say "both my girls" and he'd just slkdjflkd
